When she walked into the dining room…
Fiona had already set out an exquisite breakfast. Nicholas’s eyes lit up when he saw her coming down, and he immediately went to greet her. "Serena."
Serena grunted in acknowledgment, sat down at the table, and picked up a spoon to eat her soup.
Out of habit, Nicholas immediately handed her a glass of warm milk.
Then he picked up his utensils, intending to place a soup dumpling on her plate.
"Thank you, but I’m just having the soup. I don’t need the milk," Serena said, looking up with no particular emotion in her cool, clear eyes. "You should eat, too. You don’t need to take care of me."
With that, she avoided the dumpling Nicholas offered her and instead picked up a shrimp dumpling herself, eating it slowly and deliberately.
She served herself throughout the meal, eating quickly but with her usual elegance.
The only difference from yesterday was… she didn’t look at Nicholas once.
Nicholas’s fingers tightened around his utensils as he silently sat and watched her.
The girl seemed…
…no different from usual.
And yet, she felt completely different.
He looked at the glass of milk he hadn't managed to give her and the soup dumpling now sitting in his own bowl.
A heavy sense of disappointment washed over him.
He watched her eat in silence, his expression complicated.
Breakfast ended in a quiet, subtle tension.
When Serena finished, she put down her utensils. "Nathaniel, can I borrow the car for another day?"
"Are you going out again, Miss Lancaster?" Nathaniel glanced at Nicholas and handed Serena the car keys.
"Yes, and don't save dinner for me tonight." Serena figured she would be working late again, so she might as well eat with Rachel and the others at YB headquarters.
