There's always someone better out there.
Who could ever claim to be number one in their field?
Serena's lips curled into a mocking smile, but she didn't bother responding to him.
Instead, she started to walk around him from the other side, preparing to leave.
"Serena!"
Derek called out urgently, grabbing a nearby medical chart and striding toward her. "You heard them. The location of this patient's brain tumor is extremely tricky. Our success rate for surgery is less than ten percent! Since you claim your traditional medicine is so amazing, why don't you use your skills and save this patient without ever having to go under the knife?"
He was practically shouting.
His hysterical outburst was so shocking that other emergency teams nearby couldn't help but turn and stare.
"Mr. Wynn, the patient's vital signs are dropping! What do you think you're doing?!"
A doctor beside him yelled, frantic with worry.
But Derek seemed deaf to everyone else, his eyes fixed intently on Serena.
He shoved the medical chart right in her face.
Serena's gaze swept coolly over the CT scan displayed on the open chart.
Then, she looked away, not even bothering to grace him with a response as she moved to walk past him.
"Serena!" Derek stepped in front of her, blocking her path. "What's wrong? Didn't you say traditional medicine was profound and capable of anything? Why can't you do it now?"
Serena's eyes narrowed, her cold gaze landing on Derek's almost crazed face. She let out a scornful laugh. "Do I need to prove myself to you? Get out of my way."
"You..." How could Derek possibly move?
Before he could finish, a nurse suddenly cried out, "This is bad! The patient has a cerebral hemorrhage! The bleeding is spreading! If we don't operate immediately, the patient might..."
A family member who had come with the patient collapsed to the floor, sobbing uncontrollably.
"Mr. Wynn... please, save my father, please save him..."
Pivoting, she said, "Move."
The coldness in her voice snapped Derek back to his senses.
He whipped his head around to look at Serena.
Her cool, mocking gaze cut right through him, igniting a flare of searing humiliation in his chest.
He clenched his fists, feeling utterly humiliated. "Serena, what's with the attitude? We grew up as siblings! Even if you signed that damned agreement to sever ties, you can't erase the fact that you were once my sister!"
"Yes, you saved the Blackwoods' daughter last time, so what? Maybe that situation required traditional medicine. But do you really think you can work miracles with just a few needles? Do you have any idea what this patient..."
*Crack!*
The instant Derek's words fell...
A sharp slap landed squarely on his face, cutting him off completely.
