Annika was so earnest that everyone almost burst out laughing. Josefina had to suppress a chuckle; Annika was just too funny.
The shadowy figure coughed a few times, "Where am I?" Adam nudged him with his foot, "That's what we should be asking you. Who are you, and how did you get in here?"
The place was locked up tighter than Fort Knox, yet somehow this... person had managed to sneak in. Adam could practically see his career waving goodbye.
Really, he thought, it might be time to start getting used to living on bread and water.
"I don't know. My head hurts," came a woman's voice. The words had been muffled before, but now they were clear: it was a woman.
Oliver stepped forward. The room was well-lit, but he still couldn't make out her features.
Josefina leaned in closer and gasped, "She's covered in blood."
Oliver frowned. It really was blood—how come they hadn't noticed the smell earlier? Dorian was just as shocked. With all that blood, none of them had caught the scent.
The blood had dried, and over time, the smell had faded. It was a miracle she was still alive!
She must be nearly drained by now. The woman lay on the floor, barely breathing. Her survival was uncertain.
She knew instinctively that if she wanted to live, she'd have to prove her worth. Without it, she was just another casualty, and no one would bother saving her.
Using all her strength, she said, "Save me. I can help you take out your enemies. I know... magic."
She seemed to use all her remaining energy to get the words out before slipping into unconsciousness.
Oliver looked at Josefina, who met his gaze. Their eyes locked, and Josefina made her decision.
"We should help her, for now," Josefina decided.
Oliver nodded, "Once she wakes up, we can check out her story."
Dorian added, "If she knows magic, she might have some valuable intel for us."
