Josefina listened to the chatter and had to look down to hide her grin. She was on the verge of bursting out laughing—her grandpa was just too much. If Cole wasn’t grumbling about the house being too small, then he was just being painfully honest. Either way, a big house wasn’t in their future.
Sandi kept to herself, knowing this wasn’t her moment to speak up. Wilder didn’t say a word either; he rarely did when his parents were around. Brandon piped up again, “Alright folks, it’s time to get to work if you’ve got things to do.” He stood up, paused for a moment as if remembering something, then sat back down.
“Cole, you mentioned wanting to earn enough to buy your own place, right? Well, when you’re ready to move, just give us a shout. I’ll make sure Dorian, Oliver, and Josie are there to celebrate your big move.”
Cole was left utterly speechless. It was like he had a fishbone stuck in his throat, unable to talk and it hurt like crazy. He was in full meltdown mode. After Brandon left, Rowan slid in next to Cole, trying to play the wise advisor. “Cole, it’s not just Dorian saying this. Our dad offered to buy you a house, and you turned it down? He’s upset, man. If he offers, you take it, okay?”
Cole was still stunned into silence. He’d have gladly taken the offer, but things didn’t turn out that way. So was Rowan here to comfort him, or just to poke fun? Cole nearly ground his teeth to dust holding back a curse.
With a forced smile, Cole said, “Dorian, you’ve got a point. So, I’ve made up my mind—I’m not buying my own place after all. I’ll just live in the house Dad bought.”
Rowan waved his hands frantically. “Oh no, you can’t do that. If you backpedal, Dad’s gonna blow a fuse. Going back on your word isn’t the Baldwin family style. Cole, you’ve gotta make it on your own. You’re better than me. Dorian would be humbled.”
Rowan’s quick remarks nearly sent Cole into shutdown mode. Cole could see right through him—Dorian was playing dumb on purpose. All these seasoned players acting like they were in some ghost tale!
