The doctor glanced over Josefina’s test results. Last time, there’d only been one baby.
Now? Two. The doctor looked genuinely shocked for a second, then broke into a big smile. “Congratulations!” she said, warm and sincere.
Josefina stared at her, wide-eyed. “Two? But last time I checked, there was only one!”
Oliver was frozen in place, speechless.
Two?
Two?
The word just kept bouncing around his head, echoing like he was standing in a giant, empty room.
Twins. He was going to have twins.
He couldn’t even imagine how his grandfather would react—would he be so happy he’d pass out on the spot? Oliver didn’t even want to think about it.
Josefina, on the other hand, was almost giddy. When she glanced over and saw Oliver looking like a statue, she couldn’t help but burst out laughing.
The doctor grinned, joining in. “Looks like your husband is too happy to even talk.”
The doctor didn’t know who Oliver really was, just saw a couple totally in love and caught up in the moment.
Josefina reached over and tugged at the hem of Oliver’s shirt, bringing him back to reality.
Their eyes met, and Oliver’s were shining, dangerously close to tears. Josefina was just about to comfort him when the doctor reminded her, “Let’s do the exam, okay?”
Oliver pressed his lips together, staring at the monitor like it was written in another language.
“Josie, let’s do the check-up,” he managed, his voice low and a little rough.
Josefina took a steadying breath and lay back, letting the doctor go ahead.
...
When it was over, Oliver was still clutching the test results, and Josefina led him down the hall to talk things through with the doctor.
