It was a calm evening. Rowan had just settled into his favorite booth at the diner, ready to enjoy a steak dinner. Across from him sat Sydney, who had shown up uninvited.
Rowan continued slicing through his steak, his face giving nothing away despite Sydney's sudden arrival.
With a soft voice, Sydney asked, "Rowan, are you really going through with the divorce?"
"The papers have been sent. Do you think I'm bluffing?" Rowan replied, his tone as flat as his expression. He took another bite and looked up at her.
"Rowan, we've been together for twenty years. You can't just end it like this. What did I do wrong?" Sydney pleaded.
"You're perfect, except you betrayed me," Rowan said calmly.
Sydney was about to argue, but Rowan cut her off. "There's no point in talking. My decision is made. I've transferred all my shares to Oliver. Staying married won't get you anything."
Seeing Rowan so determined, Sydney dropped the act and got straight to the point.
"If the shares are with Oliver, what about our son, Dominic?"
Rowan chuckled, "I knew you weren't here to patch things up. You want the shares."
Sydney was lost for words.
"Dominic claimed he'd prove himself, but he doesn't have the skills for business. I'm not handing over the company just to watch it sink."
"Rowan, how can you be so heartless? You watched Dominic grow up!" Sydney exclaimed.
"I've given you plenty over the years, and you know it. Yes, I watched Dominic grow up, but I didn't raise Oliver, did I?"
Rowan continued, "The forty million is Oliver's now. I've given Dominic something more valuable than money—my time."
Sydney was speechless.
Rowan paid the bill and walked out, not wanting to waste another word on Sydney.
