Chapter 98-2
And in her hand-
Oh God.
What is she doing with a knife, in public no less?
My body moves before my brain fully processes what I’m seeing.
Jessica’s arm is already raising, pulling back. Her mouth opening to scream, “go to hell, Sabrina Moore!”
Time slows. Becomes syrupy and strange.
I see Sabrina turn. See her eyes widen with recognition and confusion.
I see Ethan start to move, but he’s too far away, too slow to prevent what’s happening.
I see Jake, frozen on the swing, his mouth opening in a scream.
And Jessica. Her arm coming down. Fast. Brutal. Aimed at Sabrina’s back.
My surroundings blur into a fusion of colors as my lungs burn. Just as the knife’s about to plunge into Sabrina, I throw myself between them.
The impact hits me like fire and ice simultaneously. A burning cold that explodes through my stomach and radiates outward.
I gasp. Or maybe scream. I can’t tell.
All I know is pain. Blinding, consuming, all–encompassing pain.
Jessica’s face is inches from mine, her expression shifting from rage to shock to horror in the span of a heartbeat.
“Dustin?” Her voice cracks. “No. No, this wasn’t–how did you get here-”
The knife is still in my stomach. I can feel it. Cold metal against hot blood.
r
She releases the handle. Steps back. Her hands come up like she’s trying to undo what just happened.
But you can’t undo a stabbing.
The crimson fluid dripping down the knife is glaringly bright.
My knees buckle.
Hands catch me–Ethan’s hands, I realize distantly. He’s lowering me to the ground, his voice sharp and commanding but I can’t make out the words.
Everything sounds like I’m underwater.
More voices. Panicked. Overlapping.
Chapter 98-2
Parents velling. Childrer erying. Someone screaming for help.
And Sabrina.
“Dustin! Oh God, Dustin-“Her hands are on my face, my chest, everywhere and nowhere.
“Jake…” I croak. Get Jake away. I don’t want my son to see me in this condition.
I try to speak but blood fills my mouth. Copper and salt and wrong.
“Don’t talk!” She’s crying now. Full sobs that shake her whole body. “Just held on. The ambulance is coming. You’re going to be fine.”
I’m not going to be fine. I know that instinctively. This is bad. This is very bad.
I’m about to die before climbing to the top of the corporate ladder
But…I saved Sabrina.
I protected her the way I should have been protecting her all along.
Jake appears in my fading vision, his small face white with terror. “Bad dad?”
Not ‘Dad.‘ Bad dad.
“Jake, baby, don’t look.” Sabrina’s trying to shield him but he won’t move.
“Is bad dad going to die?” His voice is small. Scared.
“No. No, he’s not-” But Sabrina can’t finish the lie. Her voice breaks completely.
The pain is getting worse. Spreading. Turning everything sharp and bright and wrong.
My vision is tunneling. Going dark at the edges.
In the distance, sirens. Finally.
But they sound so far away.
“Dustin, listen to me.” Sabrina’s face fills my vision. “You have to hold on. For Jake. He needs his father.”
I try to smile. Try to tell her it’s okay. That Jake has Ethan now. That he’ll be fine without me
Better than fine.
But the words won’t come. Just more blood. More pain.
“You’re an idiot.” Her voice is furious now. Angry through the tears. “A complete and total idiot. Why would
you do that? Why would you-”
Because I love you. Because I always loved you, even when I was too stupid to realize it. Because you deserved better than what I gave you, and this is the only way I know to make it right.
But I can’t say any of that. Can only lie there bleeding while she cries and Ethan applies pressure that hurts
more than the stabbing did and Jake watches, still, silent.
