“And the rest?”

< Chapter 125-

“The rest we’ll work on.”

We dance through two more songs. Other couples join us on the floor.

But I can feel eyes on us. Watching. Judging. Forming opinions.

Chapter 123

Chapter 125-2

And I can see Gran. Still standing by the entrance. Still perfectly composed. But her hands are clenched at her sides.

She’s furious.

The gala ends at midnight. Sabrina and I say our goodbyes. Collect our coats. Head for the exit.

Gran intercepts us in the hallway outside the ballroom.

“Ethan. A word.”

I look at Sabrina. She nods. “I’ll wait by the car.”

Once she’s gone, Gran turns on me.

“How dare you.”

“How dare I what? Tell the truth?”

“How dare you manipulate me like that. Announce your wedding at my event. Force my hand in front of five hundred witnesses.”

“I didn’t force anything. I made a choice. And I wanted people to know.”

“You wanted to back me into a corner. Make it impossible for me to object without looking like a villain.”

“I wanted to make it clear that Sabrina is part of this family whether you accept her or not.”

Gran’s eyes flash. “You think one speech changes anything? You think because you made a public declaration, people will suddenly forget she’s divorced? That she comes from nothing? That she’s bringing another man’s child into the Hale bloodline?”

“I think the only person who cares about that is you.”

“You’re wrong. You’re naive. And you’re making the biggest mistake of your life.”

“That’s my mistake to make.”

“Is it? Because when this falls apart-and it will fall apart-it’s not just you who suffers. It’s the foundation. The woman you call your fiancée. The boy you call son. The company. The Hale name. Everything I built.”

“Or maybe it succeeds. Maybe Sabrina and I build something that lasts. Maybe Jake grows up to be an incredible man who contributes more to the Hale legacy than any of us ever did. Maybe you’re wrong about everything.”

Gran steps closer. Her voice drops. “I’m never wrong about people, Ethan. And I’m telling you right now- this marriage won’t last. You’ll see soon enough that she’s not suitable.”

“And you’ll see soon enough that you are wrong. That you were always wrong right from the start.”

“You made a choice based on emotion instead of logic.”

Chapter 125-

“Good. Because logic is what Father used when my mom got sick. And I’d rather make mistakes with my heart than succeed with ice in my veins.”

The comparison makes her flinch.

“Don’t compare this to your parents-”

“Why not? Because you know I’m right? Because you know Father claimed to love mom until it became inconvenient? Until society started whispering about her illness?” I shake my head. “I’m not him. And Sabrina isn’t my mom. We’re writing our own story. And you can either be part of it or not. Your choice.”

Gran stares at me for a long moment.

Then she says, quietly, “You’ll regret this.”

“Maybe. But it’ll be my regret. My choice. My life.”

I walk away before she can respond.

Find Sabrina by the car, exactly where she said she’d be.

“How bad was it?” she asks.

“About as bad as expected.”

“Is she going to come to the wedding?”
