Chapter 21-1
(Five Year Old Jake)
“Did you see? Did you see? Mommy was smiling! A real smile! Not the fake one she does when
she’s sad but trying to be brave!”
We’re in the elevator going back to our room, and I’m bouncing so much that Aunt Sophia has to
grab my hand to stop me from running into a wall.
“Slow down, buddy,” she says, but she’s smiling really big too. The kind of smile that makes her
eyes crinkle at the corners. “I saw everything. Your mommy looked beautiful. And happy. Really,
really happy.”
Mommy did look pretty in her dress, and Jason looked at her like she was Cinderella. Not like Dad
who always looked at his phone when mommy asked how she looked.
She always got sad when he did that. I had to go up to her and tell her she looked great every time
to make her smile again.
But Jason didn’t need me to do that. He told mommy she looked beautiful without being told, and
that got mommy to smile so big!
I’m so happy.
Mommy never smiled like this when she was with Dad.
Never.
When she was with Dad, she always looked like her tummy hurt, or like she was trying hard not to
cry. But when she was with Jason just now her eyes got all crinkly at the corners, and she laughed
a real laugh.
And then they danced!
And then they kissed!
That’s how I know our plan is working. Jason is the best one.
I wish he was my dad right now. I wish we could tell him, “Okay, you win! You’re the new dad.” If he’s the new dad, he can always keep mommy happy. He can make sure that sad look never comes
back.
That is the most important rule of being a dad, I think. You have to keep the mommy happy. Bad Dad never learned that rule.

Tommy at school always brags about his dad, how he took him fishing, how he buys him cool toys. Tommy’s dad is okay, but he’s not super tall.
Jason is super, super tall. He has so many shiny shoes. I saw them when he was standing by the table. Like mirrors! I bet Tommy’s dad only has regular shoes.
I can’t wait to show Jason off to Tommy. I’ll walk into school, and Jason will be standing there, all tall and strong, waiting for me. Tommy will be so jealous. I’ll tell him, “This is my new dad, Jason.. He is super cool, and he keeps my mom happy.”
And the best part is, Jason can protect us.
Bad Dad can’t be bad anymore if Jason is here. The mean lady can’t be mean to mommy if Jason tells her to stop. He is strong like a superhero, even though he doesn’t wear a cape. His big/
shoulders look like a shield.
I clutch the little camera we used for the video tighter in my hand. Aunt Sophia holds the other camera bag. My heart is beating fast like a tiny drum.
We go inside our room-it’s really pretty, with two big beds and a window that shows the ocean- and Aunt Sophia sets up her laptop on the little desk. I climb onto one of the beds, picking up Rexy
to hold him tight.
“Can we watch the video again?” I ask.
“We can do better than that. We can post it so all your followers can see how happy your mommy
is.”
I bounce on the bed, excitement bubbling up in my tummy. “Really? Can we post it right now?”
