Chapter 31-2
Chapter 31-2
“And what do you get out of this?”
The question catches me off guard. What do I get?

Nothing. That’s the answer. Sabrina made it clear she doesn’t trust me, wants nothing to do with me. Even if I hand her lawyer everything he needs to destroy Dustin in court, she’ll never know I
was involved.
She made it clear she’ll never forgive me.
But Jake will have his mother. That’s what matters.
“What I always get,” I say finally. “Satisfaction.”
Freya studies me for another moment, her eyes narrowed. “That’s it?”
“That’s it.” Because as Ethan Hale, I never needed a good reason to do anything. Freya knows this, so her questions stop after getting my confirmation.
“What do you need me to do?”
“Contact Richard Hill-he’s Sabrina’s attorney. Tell him you’re an anonymous client who has information relevant to the custody case, and would like to meet him. Privately. Don’t use my
name.”
“And if he asks how I got my hands on this information?”
“Tell him he doesn’t need to know.”
She makes a note on her tablet. “Anything else?”
I think about the other files I have. The photos of Dustin and Jessica at hotels. The expense reports showing lavish spending while Sabrina was working late. The witnesses who could testify to his affairs.
I could leak all of it to the press. Destroy his reputation so thoroughly he’d never recover. Make him look so bad in the court of public opinion that no judge would give him custody.
But that’s not the right way. That’s the coward’s way. Using my resources to manipulate the narrative, to control the outcome, to play god with other people’s lives.
That’s exactly what I did with the cruise. And look how that turned out.
“No,” I say.
“Just get the evidence to her lawyer. Let him decide how to use it.”

Freya nods slowly. “For what it’s worth, sir… I think she’s lucky. You’re going out of your way to help –
her, when she doesn’t even deserve it.”
I frown at the last bit, something about her tone rubbing me the wrong way.
But when I lift my head, she’s already heading out the door.
After she leaves, I sit at my desk and pull up Jake’s account on my phone. He hasn’t posted anything new since the cruise ended. The last video is still there-Sabrina and me dancing, the kiss that went viral, the comments section filled with people who think they know our story.
If only they knew the truth. That I’m not the romantic hero who swept in to save her. I’m just another man who lied to her. Another person who thought he knew what was best for her without
asking.
But surely, not another Dustin, right?
The thought makes me sick.
My phone buzzes with an sss notification. It’s from my HR department-interview schedule for the new Creative Director position.
I almost delete it without reading. Then I see the last name on the list:
Sabrina Moore – Interview scheduled for tomorrow, 2 PM
My heart stops.
She applied to my company. To work for me. Does she know who owns the company? Did she research the position?
Or is this another cruel twist of fate, bringing her back into my orbit when she made it clear she wants nothing to do with me?
I stare at her name for a long time, my mind racing through possibilities.
I could cancel the interview. Tell HR we’ve filled the position. Make sure she never has to see me
again.
But I had nothing to do with this arrangement this time.
I tried to stay out of her way, as she demanded. But now…she needs a job.
I can’t be the one to place her in a precarious position, especially when her employment or lack of, could influence her custody case.
So I could let it happen. Let her interview with the hiring manager, who doesn’t know anything about our history. Let her get the job on her own merits, if she’s qualified.
