Chapter 38-1

(Dustin’s POV)

“Are you serious?” The words come out harder than intended. “I’m about to lose my son because I

chose you. I left Sabrina for you. That hasn’t changed. So how…”

“Then prove it.” Jessica pulls out her phone, opening up social media. “Look at this. Look at what

people in the company are saying about us.”

I don’t want to look. I’ve been avoiding the company forum and social media for days because every platform is the same-people tearing me apart, calling me everything from deadbeat dad

narcissistic asshole.

But Jessica shoves the phone in my face anyway.

Thread: Let’s talk about Dustin Reed and why he deserves to lose custody

This man cheated on his wife with his boss. Fired his wife through said boss. Then tried to take

custody of their son out of spite. And now he’s mad that his kid found someone better? The audacity. The AUDACITY.

The thread has forty thousand likes. Forty thousand people who think they know me. Who’ve

decided I’m the villain in this story.

“See?” Jessica’s voice is sharp. “This is what we’re dealing with. And it’s only going to get worse if

you lose Wednesday. So stop staring at Sabrina and focus on what matters-destroying her credibility before she destroys ours.”

She’s right. I know she’s right.

But I can’t stop looking at the restaurant window. At Sabrina’s face, lit up in a way I haven’t seen in

years.

At the easy intimacy between her and this stranger.

Was she ever that comfortable with me?

The question comes unbidden, unwelcome.

What do I even care if she was ever comfortable with me? It’s not like I ever cared about her, about

how she felt.

So…

I shove the questions away and raise my phone again. More photos. Different angles. Evidence

that Sabrina Moore is an unfit mother who prioritizes men over her son.

Never mind that Jake isn’t with her right now. Never mind that I’m the one who destroyed our

marriage by sleeping with Jessica.

Never mind any of that, because nobody cares about the how and who started first.

All they care for is the drama.

So I need to give them that drama, get that win. And if destroying Sabrina’s reputation is what it

takes to win, then that’s exactly what I’ll do.

“I’m going to make her regret ever crossing me,” I say quietly.

Jessica smiles. “That’s what I want to hear.”

The door to our booth opens without warning. Parker walks in, his expression stormy.

He doesn’t wait for permission, just strides over and closes the door behind him. “What the hell are you doing?”

“Working. Unlike some people.” I pocket my phone. “Did you need something?”

“Yeah, I need you to stop being a complete idiot.” Parker crosses his arms. “I just got off the phone with Tom-your lawyer. He’s concerned about your strategy.”

“My strategy is fine.”

“Your strategy is to drag your ex-wife through the mud using photos of her on a date. How is that

fine?”

“It’s evidence of her instability-”

“It’s evidence that she’s moving on with her life. Something you’ve been doing since the moment

Jessica came back.” Parker’s voice rises. “You cheated on Sabrina. You fired her through your mistress. And now you’re trying to take her kid because she had the audacity to start dating

again?”

“It’s not the same-”

“It’s exactly the same! You’re being a double-standard bastard and you’re too blind to see it.”

Jessica steps forward, her voice cold. “Parker, you’re overstepping-”

“No, he’s understepping.” Parker doesn’t even look at her. “Dustin, I’ve known you for ten years. We’ve been friends since college. And I’m telling you right now-if you go through with this, if you try to take Jake from Sabrina out of spite, karma is going to hit you so hard you won’t know what happened.”
