Chapter 50-1

(Sophia’s POV)

“Jake, you-”

“I love you, Aunt Sophia.” His eyes are shining with tears now, but they look deliberate. “Thank you

for all you’ve done for me and mom. When I start living with bad dad, can you please take care of

mom for me? Make sure she’s not too sad?”

Oh, this manipulative little-

Sabrina really needs to see the true face of her supposedly innocent child.

He’s using emotional blackmail to get me to bail on dinner.

But… he has a point.

Dustin won’t let this go. He’s too proud, too angry. Once he calms down from today’s humiliation,

he’s going to join forces with his mistress to come after Sabrina with everything he has. Appeals. Lawyers. Probably try to dig up dirt to use against her.

And I can’t be there twenty-four seven to protect her. I have a company to run. A life of my own.

But Ethan? Ethan has resources I can’t even imagine. Money. Power. Connections. If he and Sabrina get together-if he decides to protect her-Dustin won’t stand a chance.

It’s manipulative as hell. Using my best friend’s safety as justification for meddling in her love life

again.

But I can’t deny the logic.

“Fine. I’ll tell your mom I have a stomachache. Happy now?”

“YAY!” Jake launches himself at me, wrapping his little arms around my neck. “Thank you, Aunt Sophia! You’re the best! The absolute best in the whole wide world! I love you so much!”

He plants a wet kiss on my cheek and then dashes off, probably to go plot the next phase of his

matchmaking scheme.

I stand there in my living room, feeling like I just got played by a kindergartener.

When did I become so useless?

I open my purse and dust a little powder on my face. Not too much, but enough to make my complexion seem off.

The guest room door opens, and Sabrina emerges wearing a soft blue dress I bought her last Christmas. She never wore it when she was with Dustin. Said it was too nice for regular occasions.

But she’s wearing it now.

And she looks beautiful. The dress brings out her eyes, makes her skin glow. Her hair is down, loose waves framing her face.

“How do I look?” She does a little spin, and Jake claps enthusiastically.

“Mom! You look beautiful! Almost like Cinderella!”

“Almost?”

“Yeah, because you are more beautiful than Cinderella!”

“Ahhh… that’s so sweet of you, Jake.” I coo, giving him the stink eye.

He doesn’t even look at me, all his attention focused on his mom. I watch, gaping, as he snaps off

my rose on the dining table and stands on a chair to insert it in his mom’s hair.

“Now you’re all ready to go.”

“Not too much? It’s just dinner-”

“It’s a celebration dinner,” I interrupt, forcing my voice to stay steady. “You should look nice.”

Sabrina’s smile fades slightly. “Are you okay? You look pale.”

“Actually…” I press a hand to my stomach. “I’m not feeling great. I think all the stress from court is

catching up with me. My stomach is killing me.”

Concern floods her face immediately. “Do you need to lie down? Should I cancel dinner?”

“No!” The word comes out too sharp. I soften my tone. “No, you guys should still go. Jake’s been

looking forward to it all day. And Ethan is coming all the way here. It would be rude to cancel it at

the last second.”

“But you-”

“I’ll be fine. I just need to rest. Maybe order some soup or something bland.” I wave toward the door. “You two go. Have fun. And don’t forget to bring me leftovers.”

Sabrina hesitates, clearly torn between concern for me and not wanting to disappoint Jake.

Jake, the little traitor, tugs on her hand. “Aunt Sophia said she’ll be okay, Mom. We should go. Mr. Jason is waiting.”

“I don’t know…” Sabrina looks at me again. “Maybe I should stay. We can order in, watch a movie-”
