Chapter 56-1
Chapter 56-1
(Sophia’s POV)
I’ve been pacing outside Jake’s room for twenty minutes, and the little monster still won’t open the
door.
“Jake, sweetheart, please talk to me.” I press my hand against the wood. “Whatever’s wrong, we
can fix it. But you have to let me help.”
Silence.
Not even a sniffle or a shuffle of movement. Just dead, stubborn silence.
I knew this was coming. Had a feeling things would develop this way ever since their return from
that dinner four days ago, even though I’d hoped they wouldn’t.
Jake wants Ethan to be his new dad. It’s obvious to anyone with eyes. The way he lights up when
he talks about him, the way he’s been drawing those pictures with the three of them as a family.
But Sabrina, still nursing past betrayal and heartbreak, can’t see what’s right in front of her eyes.
Or maybe she does see it. Her heart is just not ready to accept, or finds it too hard to accept that
someone of Ethan Hale’s status could be genuinely and truly interested in her despite being a
single mom.
To be honest, I find it surreal too.
But unlike Sabrina, I can see why Ethan would choose her over the countless women throwing
themselves at him.
Sabrina is strong. Sincere. Devoted to the people she loves in a way that’s rare in this world where
materialistic values and selfishness have corrupted the majority of people.
She gives everything to the people who matter to her, expecting nothing in return, like in the case of Dustin. Only Dustin didn’t see her worth. She’s genuine in a way most people have forgotten how
to be, but Dustin didn’t value it.
But Ethan…Ethan sees that quality and apparently, he values it.
But to Sabrina? That quality isn’t anything special. It’s just who she is. She doesn’t understand that it makes her extraordinary, and that’s why she’s unable to understand why Ethan Hale wants her over all the outstanding single women out there.
My phone buzzes. I pull it out and see it’s Sabrina’s number.

Chapter 56-1
“I’m on my way,” she says before I can even say hello. Her voice is breathless, panicked. “What,
happened? Is he hurt? Did something happen at school?”
“He’s fine physically. But Sabrina, he locked himself in his room and refuses to come out. I tried
everything. But he won’t talk to me. Won’t eat. Won’t even respond to my provocations. This is
new.”
“I’m five minutes away. Don’t let him-just don’t let him do anything. I’m coming.”
She hangs up before I can respond.
I return to my position outside Jake’s door, trying one more time. “Jake, your mom’s almost here
Please, buddy. Open up. Talk to me.”
Still nothing.
The front door bursts open exactly four minutes later. Sabrina doesn’t even set down her bag
before she’s running down the hallway, her face pale with worry.
“Where is he?”
“His room. He’s been in there for over an hour.”
Sabrina knocks on the door, her hand shaking. “Jake? Baby, it’s mom. Open the door. Please.”
Silence.
“Jake, I know you’re upset with me. And you have every right to be. But please, just open the door
so we can talk about it.”
Nothing.
Sabrina tries the handle. Locked.
“When did he start locking his door?” she asks me, her voice tight with panic.
“Last week. After you two fought about Ethan.”
She flinches at the name. Then turns back to the door, her voice firmer now. “Jake Reed, you have until the count of three to open this door. One-”
“It’s Jake Moore!” Jake’s voice finally comes through, muffled but unmistakable. “And I don’t want to talk to you!”
Relief and pain flash across Sabrina’s face in equal measure. At least he’s responding now.
“Baby, we need to talk-”
“No! You don’t understand! You never understand!”
