As the two of us walked towards the waterhole, a few of the boys began to whistle, as I heard one of them holler out, “Damn Mazie. Making me turn to look at her with a smile.

“See, I told you that you look smoking in that.”

Mazie’s cheeks instantly blushed, but I could see that the attention she was getting was giving her a new confidence, one that she needed and deserved. Even though I had no plans on staying here after the school year was over, it didn’t mean that I couldn’t have a friend, and if I could help her see her true worth before the school year was over, that was exactly what I was going to do. Who knows, she might even

want to leave this god–forsaken town with me.

As we stepped to the edge of the waterhole, my eyes spotted Cash returning to the party, but thankfully he didn’t look in my direction, as he walked straight towards a group of guys standing in the far corner of the

opening.

Mazie must have noticed me staring at him, because she asks, “Are you sure everything is okay?”

Taking her hand into mine, I say to her, “I’m fine.” As I jump into the water, taking her with me, as she lets

out a scream.

As our heads rise from the water, she splashes me with her hands, and I let out a giggle before swimming off towards the middle of the waterhole. Leaning back, I looked up at the clear blue skies, and with my

ears below the water, muffling the sound of everyone around me, I felt a sense of peace come over me. Closing my eyes, I felt relaxed for the first time since got here, as if the weight of everything that happened was just floating away with the gentle waves that were softly crashing against me.

Taking slow and steady breaths, I found myself lost in the serene feeling, but that feeling was short–lived, when a huge wave of water crashed against me, taking my head abruptly underwater. I wasn’t prepared to be swept under, and found myself taking on water, as I tried to resurface, before I began to cough out the water that had filled my lungs, while I did my best to tread water at the same time.

A protective arm at that moment wrapped around me, helping me to stay afloat as equghed out the

water, all while I heard a familiar male’s voice say to me, “I got you.”

Knowing whose arms I was in, I leaned my head back against his chest, as I coughed the rest of the water out, somehow knowing that he had me, and that I was safe in his arms. It wasn’t until I finished coughing did I hear the commotion going on, making me raise my head to see through my now tear–filled eyes, Connor being cuffed by the neck by Cash, as I heard him say to him, “You could have killed her.”

“I swear I didn’t see her before I jumped.” Connor pleaded, making me realize what had happened.

In my bliss of feeling relieved from all my problems, I must have floated in the direct path of where they were jumping off the rock, making me realize that it was my fault, not his. Pulling slightly from Chance’s chest, I quickly say, “I’m sorry. I must have floated towards where they were jumping. It’s not his fault.”

No, you are new here and don’t know better. He should have looked first.” Chance said back to me, and I knew by his tone there was no way I was going to change his mind, so I left it be, but I knew I was going to

have to apologize to Connor later, knowing that I was the one that had caused it.

“I should probably get out and find Mazie.” I said as I tried to pull away from him, but he held onto me, not allowing me to swim away, as he says to me, “Let me help you.”

“I’m fine.”

“No, you just took on a lot of water, and you need to take it easy.” He argued with me, and now I see why everyone listens to what he has to say, because there was no way of winning an argument with him.

As he helped me to the edge, I began to look around for Mazie, but she was nowhere in sight, making me begin to worry if something had happened to her too.

“What’s wrong?” Chance asked me, as I pulled myself up onto the ledge, and looked toward where Mazie had placed the blanket, only to see the blanket was no longer there, and all that was left behind was my

Cover–up and a towel.

“Nothing. I guess Mazie left me here.” I told him, as I stood there in disbelief, that she would do that to me.

“I saw her take off with Cash, but don’t worry, I will take you home.” Chance quickly offers me, making me believe that he had something to do with her leaving me behind, so that he could get me alone.

What was it with these Ryder brothers and me?
