“I didn’t have the heart to clean out Carla’s room when she left. I always hoped that one day she would come home, and I wanted everything to be the way she left it.” Ms. Wilson explained to me as I followed her out of Raven’s bedroom to the living room.

Ms. Wilson moved at that moment to take a seat in her recliner chair, as she said to me, am grateful that my granddaughter has you and your brothers in her life. I was so worried that she wouldn’t fit in here and wanted to leave me too, but she seems to be adapting well thanks to all of you.”

“There is no need to thank me. Raven is very special to me, and I would do anything for her.”

A soft smile formed on Ms. Wilson’s face, before she said to me, “I was hoping you would say that. I never normally ask for help, as I have always done with what little I have, but I need to ask a favor from you.”

“Anything.” I said to her, wanting her to know that I would do anything to help her or Raven.

“It’s not for me, but for Raven. Her eighteenth birthday is next weekend, and I know if her mother was alive, she would have had a party for her, but I am barely making ends meet here to have the spare cash to even buy her a cake. I was hoping that maybe you could throw her a party at the ranch with a few friends. Nothing big, just a small gathering to make her feel special.”

My heart instantly sank into my chest, hearing what she was asking of me, as it killed me to know how tight things were here for her. I wanted to do this for her, but once again I was in a tight spot with having my business meeting next weekend, which in return I had my own

favor to ask of her.

“I would love to help throw a party for Raven, but I must admit, I had my own favor I was going to ask of you.”

“Okay, what is it?” She asked as she stared at me, with a confused look on her face, as if she wondered what I could possibly ask of her.

I don’t know why at that moment I felt nervous, but I did, as I felt like I was asking her for her granddaughter’s hand in marriage, which in a way I was, if things went to plan next weekend.

Taking a deep breath, I said to her, “I have a business meeting in Freedom Port, and I was wondering if you would allow Raven to accompany me for the weekend. I knew that it was her birthday, and I wanted to take her out for a night in the city. Plus, I thought that she might

want to spend the day on the beach, making her feel like she was at home. I promise if you allow her to go with me, I will take extremely good care of her, and when we come back, I can have a surprise party waiting for her.”

Ms. Wilson sat silently in her chair, and for a second, I thought that she was going to refuse my favor, but to my surprise, she said to me, “If Raven wants to go, then I cannot stop her, as she is officially an adult next weekend. But I must warn you, even trying to show Raven how wonderful her life could be here with you, there is a chance that she will leave here too, just like her mother did. I just don’t want to see you get your heart broken like your father did all those years ago.”

Nodding my head, I admitted to her, “I am very aware that Raven plans on returning to California, but I believe both of us would rather she stays here. In all honesty, Ms. Wilson, I am in love with your granddaughter, and you can’t fault me for trying to make her see that love I have for her and that Beaumont can be her home too.”

A smile once again forms on Ms. Wilson’s face, as she slowly nods her head, before she says back to me, “It takes a man to admit his love out loud like you just did, and I have to say, you have my blessing, but ultimately, we both know that in the end, it is Raven’s choice what

she decides to do.”

“I’m well aware of that, but I plan on making sure if she leaves that I have all my cards on the

table before she makes that decision.”

“Very well then, but make sure when you say all your cards, you have all the cards, even the ones you are now holding back from her on that table.” She then tells me, making me wonder if she wasn’t quite in the dark as we all thought she was, about whom the people of this town truly were, but that wasn’t a bridge I personally wanted to cross with her tonight.

So, instead of questioning her, I just promised her, “I will make sure I do that.” Before bidding her goodnight, so that I could head home to speak to Cash about the picture I had found in

Raven’s room.
