“Raven!” I called out to her, as I raced towards her at full speed, thanking the Moon Goddess that she was

alive.

Raven’s head slowly turned in my direction, allowing me to see her tear-stained face, and the immense

pain in her eyes. Her right arm and tank-top were completely covered in fresh blood, as her left hand held tightly onto the bicep of her right arm, exactly where I had felt the fantom pain in my own arm.

“Chance.” Slipped from her lips so faintly that I barely heard it before reached her, while new tears began

to pour from the corners of her eyes, as I wrapped my arms around her now frail body.

A whimper now came from her lips, making me realize that she was hurt beyond what the naked eye could see. “Hold on, Love. I got you. You are safe now.” I said, trying to comfort her, before I gently picked her up in my arms, knowing that I had to get her medical treatment.

Raven leaned her head against my bare chest, as her warm tears saturated my flesh, and my heart ached seeing her in this much pain. Damn it, I was her mate, and I was to protect her, but here she was battered and bleeding in my arms, making me feel like I had failed her.

As I turned and began to walk back towards the entrance of the cemetery, Cash and Mazie were just

catching up to me, and when Cash’s eyes landed on Raven’s body in my arms, I could see the concern in his eyes. Using our mind link, I told him, “She’s going to be okay, but we need to get her medical attention.”

I could tell that it was killing Cash, seeing Raven like this in my arms, unable to comfort her in the way that I was. To my surprise, Cash broke the agreement that we had made, as he walked straight over to me, placing his hand on her cheek, as he leaned down and whispered into her ear, “We got you, and we are going to make sure that they never lay a finger on you again.” Before he placed a gentle kiss on her

forehead.

Raven’s eyes remained closed, as her head nuzzled into me, and I honestly don’t even know if she was coherent to hear his words, but I could see that it made Cash feel better, comforting her in a way a mate

should.

Cash’s eyes darkened as he stared down at our mate, and through our mind link, Cash told me, “Take care of our girl. I’m going to make sure the bastard pays for what he has done.”

Cash took off before I could stop him, in the direction that our father’s howl had come from, but I knew by the look in his eyes, he needed to make sure that the rogue responsible for hurting our mate paid dearly for it. I felt a pinch of jealousy, knowing that he was going to make the bastard pay, but I knew that I had more important things to take care of, and that was our mate.

Mazie followed me the rest of the way out of the cemetery, opening my door to my truck so that I could lay Raven on my backseat, while she remained silent, knowing that I wasn’t pleased with her. For Goddess’s sake, she was of Beta’s blood, and her actions today proved to me that she wasn’t worthy to

hold the title of my brother’s Beta.

For years now I had overlooked the fact that she was a she wolf, believing that her sex didn’t matter to

hold the title as second Beta in command, but after today I was questioning how a second in command

Beta could leave their Luna to die.

Shutting the door to my truck, once Raven was comfortably inside, Mazie finally broke her silence by saying to me, “Chance, I swear I didn’t want to leave her, but she commanded me to. You have to believe

me.”

I shook my head in disbelief at Mazie, as I moved around my truck to the driver’s side door, not wanting to have this conversation with her right now, because I needed to get Raven medical attention. But Mazie followed me, and as I opened my door, she pushed it shut, before she said to me with a straight face, “I’m

not lying to you, Chance. I think Raven is one of us.”

Keeping my hand on the door handle, I began to shake my head once again at her, realizing that she would

say anything to justify her actions of not protecting her Luna to be.

“Mazie, I don’t have time for this nonsense. We both know that she is just a mere human like her grandmother. I am disappointed in you, and, honestly, right now isn’t the right time to speak to me about this. We will speak of it later, when I reconsider your position as second Beta.”

Mazie’s eyes widened, as she took a step back, shocked by what I had said to her, but she had to realize that there would be consequences for her lack of actions to protect Raven, especially against a rogue.

As I moved to get into my truck, Mazie’s head lowered in defeat, but I heard her say under her breath, “I guess I am going to have to prove it to you.” Before I shut my door, thinking how foolish she was sounding, knowing that I would have sensed Raven’s wolf by now if she had one.

But as I pulled away from the cemetery, I looked in my rearview mirror at Raven, lying on my backseat, thinking how much easier this all would be if Mazie was only right.
