Chapter 61-2

My eyebrows furrowed, as I stared at her, before asking her, “Just like my mother?” questioning what she could possibly mean by that.

Their grandmother begins to shake her head, as she moves to walk away from me, while she says, “It’s nothing. Don’t mind this old woman. I don’t realize what I say-sometimes.”

It was clear that she had misspoken, telling me something that the elders had obviously agreed not to speak about, but I stopped her by reaching out and gently grabbing her arm, while I said back to her,” Please, just tell me.”

She looked at the door, and then at the window, as if she was worried someone was nearby. Finally, as if she felt like she could speak freely to me without anyone hearing her, she moved back to the bed, taking a seat on the edge, before she leaned down and whispered to me, “Your mother was attacked by a rogue wolf too. Not just any rogue wolf, an Alpha rogue. You must have seen the scars she bared from the attack on her back. I remember treating them myself. They were so deep, but your mother was a fighter, and she recovered from the incident quickly.”

I saw my mother’s bare back on many occasions, and not once do I remember seeing the faintness of a scar present on it, but that didn’t mean that she couldn’t have had plastic surgery to remove the scar before I was born. Under any other circumstances, I would have dismissed their grandmother’s words she had just spoken as crazy talk, but with everything that has been transpiring since I had come here, I believe her words held truth to them, and that she was the only one being truthful with me.

But now I had questions about what she had just confessed to me, leading me to ask her, “What is an Alpha rogue?”

Her eyes widened by my question, as she sat up straight, looking around the room once again, before she said to me, “Oh dear, it is the scariest and strongest of all the rogues. Normally, it is an Alpha-born male that has been disowned by his pack or, in some cases, lost a challenge of his position by another Alpha-born blooded wolf. Regardless, he is stronger than other wolves, and without a pack, he loses all his born senses to protect, leading him to go mad and ferule.”

Remembering back to what my grandmother said my mother had seen, and what I had been attacked by the first two times, I asked her, “Would this rogue Alpha by chance have fur as black as night, and eyes that glow red like fire?”

Bringing her hand up over her mouth, her eyes widened again from my detailed description, telling me that my hunch had to be right. But as she says to me, “Only firstborn Alphas have fur as black as night.” She then grabbed hold of my hand, squeezing it, as she says now to me, “Tell me. Did you see this wolf?” As her eyes begged me for an answer.

Nodding my head to her, tears began to form in her eyes, before she turned her face away, as if to hide her tears from me. Letting go of my hand, she stood from the edge of the bed, holding her hand acrost her chest, as she gave out what sounded like a cry of relief, before I could have sworn, I heard her say, “My

Ethan” under her breath.

I so wanted to know what happened to Ethan and my mother and now seemed like the perfect opportunity to finally ask, but before could question her further, Chance’s voice echoes through the room, as he says,

“You’re awake.”

My head turns to see him standing in the doorway, as his grandmother remains standing with her back to me, making me worried that I had pushed her too far for answers. It was clear that our little talk had brought up painful memories of losing her son, leading me to believe that an Alpha rogue was the cause of his death, just like I had suspected, along with the reason why my mother had left this town.

All the answers I sought, I now knew that the elders held, but trying to break through the oath they all seemed to have taken to keep hushed was going to be the hard part of finding out the truth. But I had broken down their grandmother’s barriers, and I knew if I could have more time alone with her, then just maybe she might give me more information about what truly happened all those years ago.

Unfortunately, now wasn’t that time to pump her for more information, as it was clear she was upset and needed some time to process the fact that they once again had an Alpha rogue on their hands.

From our little talk, I was now concerned, knowing that this might be what killed all those teens all those years ago, and I feared history was repeating itself. Unfortunately, without the help of the elders telling us what truly happened all those years ago, there was a good chance this Alpha rogue was going to succeed in killing more innocent people, just like the last one had.

Unlike my mother, who had run from this, I found myself unable to take Mrs. Jacob up on her offer to leave, because I could never live with myself, knowing that this thing could kill so many of those that I had grown to love and care about. I needed to find out more information about Alpha rogues, and I needed to stop it before anyone else in this town got hurt, but I had no clue how I was going to do this, as I had no

means to stop one.

But as my shrink kept telling me, “If there is a will, then there is a way.” And something told me, especially after what happened today to me, that there was one particular Alpha wolf that protected this town that

would help me, just like he once again did today.
