“I know I dropped the ball coming to you in the first place, but I thought that I had it under control. I take

full responsibility for what happened to Josie, and to Raven…” I began to apologize to him, but he stopped me before I could plead my full case to him by saying, “Chance, the elders and I have already spoken and

made our decision. You and your brothers will not interfere with these matters. You will maintain the

family business and continue to go about your daily business with caution, leaving the rest to me to deal

with. This is not a request but an order. Is that understood?”

I stared at my father in disbelief, as he had never given an Alpha order to me in my entire life. It was clear

that Raven was on to something, because my father and the elders were going as far as keeping me, the future Alpha of this pack, out of what was happening. It was clear that whatever they were hiding, they didn’t want me to find out about it. But I would be damned if I was going to listen, especially if I was to be

their leader.

“I understand.” I said back to him, trying to maintain my cool, even though my wolf was stirring now inside of me, not happy with my father’s Alpha’s order, as my wolf wanted to challenge him for the Alpha’s

position.

Getting up abruptly from the bar stool, I stormed out of the house, needing another run to blow off some

steam and come up with a plan to figure out what the hell was actually going on around here.

As I stepped outside, Cash was just getting back from his pursuit of the rogue, and by the look on his face,

he had failed to find him and fulfill his promise to make him pay for what he had done to our mate. I didn’t

have to say a single word to him, as I was sure that he could feel my anger and frustration radiating from me, while I stepped off the porch, shifting into my wolf, before I took off towards the mountains that

surround our ranch.

I should have known that he would follow me, even in his tired state, as he was loyal to me, unlike Chase,

was. My father was right when he said that the three of us couldn’t agree to disagree, as I knew that Chase and I would never be on the same page, especially if he continued down this destructive path, he was on

with Jessica.

I had thought that he might be coming around, smelling his scent around Raven’s house, but it had been

days now since I had seen him, making me wonder what the hell he was up to. Our father had been so

busy that he hadn’t even noticed Chase’s lack of appearance around the ranch, but on the other hand, he was never present much before this all started going down.

“For goddess’ sake Chance, slow down, so we can talk about this.” I heard Cash say through our mind link making me realize that I was already halfway up the side of the mountain, and that I had left my wolf take full control, while I had been lost in my thoughts.

Taking back control, I came to a halt, shifting back into my human form, leaving out a growl of frustration, as Cash caught up to me, shifting back into his human form too.

“What happened? Is Raven, okay?” He asks me with the look of dread on his face, worried about our mate.

“Raven will recover.” I quickly assured him, knowing how mad I would be going, not knowing if she was

okay.

The look of relief took over his features, before he asked, “Then what has your panties in a bunch now?”

Another growl slipped from my lips, making Cash take a step back from me, realizing now wasn’t the time to be joking around. I loved my brother, and I loved that he had a sense of humor like our mother had, but

now wasn’t the time for it!

“Our father just gave me an Alpha order to not interfere with his pursuit of hunting the rogues. Along with that, he told me that I was not ready to take over as the head Alpha.”

“What? Why would he not want us to be involved in dealing with the rogues, especially when it is our mate that is involved with these attacks?” Cash asks me as he leaves out his own growl, and I could see that he

is just as disturbed by the order as I am.

“I don’t know, but we are going to find out. As for Raven, there was a reason she was in that cemetery today, and thankfully she trusted me enough to tell me why. It turns out she has been trying to figure out why her mother left this town all those years ago, and it somehow points to our uncle’s death, along with a series of other deaths. I believe that something happened in our pack, and our father, along with the

elders, have been hiding it from all of us.”

“Do you think that is why our uncle’s grave was disturbed?” Cash now asks me, making a valiant point of why his grave of all the graves was the only one that had been tampered with.

Thinking back, I remember the look on our father’s face, and I remember how he had ordered us to go back to the ranch, but I had chalked it up to him being upset, due to it being his brother’s grave that had

been desecrated. Now I was wondering if there was more to this, and if it was a message from this Alpha

rogue to him.

“Honestly, I’m not sure, but we aren’t going to sit back like our father wants us to do. We are going to find

out what the elders are hiding, and we are going to figure out what the hell is going on.” I told Cash, before I shifted back into my wolf, and took off towards town, now determined more than ever to find out what

the hell was going on around here.
