It was clear from what he was telling me that the secrets stemmed further back than his generation, making me now wonder just how far back this family secret went.

“Your grandfather and great–uncle thought that they were strong enough to protect your father and me, but little did they know this rogue Alpha had more reasoning than the ones before him.”

“Wait. So, you are telling me that this same thing happened all those years ago with Raven’s mother?” | asked him, slowly piecing it together, realizing that this had something to do with Raven and her mother, but I still couldn’t grasp the reasoning why, since they were just humans.

“That’s exactly what I am telling you, and it will continue to happen until either Raven leaves our territory and hides among the humans like her mother did or all three of you claim her as your mate, unlocking who Raven truly is.”

“What do you mean by who she truly is?” I now ask him, as I think back to the grave in the cemetery with the Wilson surname on it, wondering if it could be possible that Raven actually was one of us.

“Don’t tell me you never questioned why Ms. Wilson is the only known human on our territory.” My uncle says sarcastically to me, as if he couldn’t believe that I wouldn’t question it.

But the truth was, I never really did, because over the years my father had always watched over Ms. Wilson, like she was part of the pack, making me never question why she was allowed to live in our territory, owning a piece of our land.

“Should I be questioning it?” I asked him, wanting him now to just get to the point, because I felt like the conversation we were having was anything but straightforward with what the hell was going on here.

My uncle stopped rocking his chair, as if he could hear the frustration in my tone. Turning his good side of his face towards me, he looks me straight in the eyes and says to me, “You damn well should. Ms. Wilson is the key to everything that has happened and is about to happen again. There’s a reason why she is allowed to live in our territory under the protection of our pack.”

“And why is that?”

My uncle just stared at me for a second, as if he was pondering whether to answer my question, but then he finally decided to confess to me, “Because she is the greatest granddaughter of the original Alpha of this territory.”

My hand instantly moved to the back of the old wooden kitchen chair beside me, to steady myself, as I took in the bombshell that he had just dropped on me. All my life, I had been lied to, saying that my family were the ones responsible for establishing this territory, but to find out now that we had taken it from my mate’s family was by far a hard pill to swallow.

But that wasn’t the hardest pill to swallow, as I knew now that Mazie wasn’t lying to me, and that Raven was one of us. Hell, Raven wasn’t just one of us, she was actually the heiress of our pack, which was clearly stolen from her ancestors by my family.

“I can see what you are thinking, and let me assure you, that isn’t what happened. I thought the same thing when my uncle finally confessed our real history to me, but I quickly realized that our families were not at war with each other, but allies that were brought together by a mate bond.”

Pulling the chair out from under the small kitchen table, I took a seat, giving my uncle my full attention, as Tdidn’t want to miss a single detail of the story, he was about to tell me. I was about ready to finally hear the truth about our family’s history, and along with that, I was hoping to figure out a way to protect Raven from whatever it was that was happening, so that I could keep her safely here in Beaumont with me.

Unlike my father and my uncle, I didn’t think I could just let Raven go, like they had let her mother go. If I planned on keeping her here with me, then I needed to know exactly what my brothers and I were up against, so I could ensure/not only Raver’s safety, but also my brothers‘ and the pack’s safety too.
