There. That should be good.” said Mrs. Ryder, as she puts the finishing touches on the new bandage on my arm, before she says, I’m a little late this morning getting around. Would you be a dear person and help me with breakfast. I am sure the boys are going to have one heck of an appetite this morning, since they all missed dinner last night.

Nodding my head, I told her, I can do that, but just to let you know, Cash went to meet Mazie somewhere in town, and Evan took off looking for Chance.”

Well, I guess that just leaves us girls then. She says, as a mischievous smile forms on her face, while she moves to the refrigerator, pulling out what looks like an apple pie.

Sitting the pie on the island countertop, she moves back to the refrigerator, but this time to the freezer, pulling out a tub of vanilla ice cream. Turning back to look at me, she says, You know what, I really don’t feel like cooking after the day we all had yesterday, so I think maybe we should just splurge and indulge ourselves this morning. What do you say?

How was I to turn down, an offer of homemade pie and ice cream? Plus, this was going to give me the opportunity to spend some more time with her, hopefully getting her to talk like I had her talking last night before Chance showed up.

Opening the silverware drawer, I pulled out two spoons, handing one to Ms. Ryder, as I said to her, I say, pass the ice cream here.” While I pulled out a bar stool taking a seat.

The two of us sat at the kitchen island, indulging in pie and ice cream, like we didn’t have a care in the world, while she slowly once again began to speak of her past. My Edgar loved apple pie. He could eat it for every meal if I had let him. He had the biggest sweet tooth, unlike Eric.

A part of me wanted to ask her who Eric was, but then I already knew, as there was no doubt in my mind that Eric was Edgar’s twin brother, and her other mate. So instead of asking her who he was, I just said to her, Let me guess, Eric was more of a meat and potato guy.”

Mrs. Ryder let out a chuckle, before she says, You guessed right on that one. Eric loved his meals. There were some days that he would eat at your grandmother’s and then come back to the ranch and eat again. I swear he had a bottomless pit.

I looked at her with a curious look on my face, wondering why Eric would have been eating at my grandmother’s house, when Mazie had told me that the Ryder brothers had always shared a mate. In Edgar and Eric’s case, it would have been Mrs. Ryder, sitting in front of me, but something was telling me that maybe there might have been a little more to their love triangle.

My grandmother had been sweet with all the Ryder males, and they had been extremely good to her, but when Cash invited her out to the ranch for dinner on behalf of his grandmother, her whole demeanor changed, making me wonder back then what was going on. But now I think I just might have my answer, as I wonder if my grandmother and Eric were having an affair.

As if Mrs. Ryder could see the wheels turning in my head. She said to me, Eric was very fond of your grandmother, and the four of us used to hang out a lot.

Did something happen?I asked her, wondering if she would continue to tell me the truth.

To my surprise, she said to me, Eric had to make a choice in his life, one of duty versus happiness. As you probably already figured out, he chose his duty over his happiness.”

My head lowered, astrealized what she was telling me. My grandmother’s last chance at true love had probably ended with Eric, as l’am sure my grandmother had suffered enough heartache in her time. That was probably why she remained single until this day, as every man in her life had chosen something else than to be with her.

My mind then, at that moment, went to my own situation, and I don’t know why, but it went straight to Chase, as I knew it was clear that he was the least bit interested in me. But it had me wondering in the end, if he had two brothers that claimed me as their mate, would he sacrifice the love of his life to fulfill a duty, just like his uncle had done, because of a stupid commitment he thought that he owed his family.

Honestly, I thought things were complicated when Mazie was trying to explain it to me, and I thought back then my worst problem would be being able to accept them all, but now I see that it is not just me that it affects, but it affects them too, especially if they have feelings for someone else, like Chase has for Jessica.

The last thing I wanted to be was a home wrecker, making me wonder if there was a way around this whole thing the Ryder family had going on. As I wondered about that, I heard the screen door open, making me lean on my bar stool to look down at the hallway that leads to the foyer, to see Cash walking in my direction. A smile instantly forms on his face when he spots me, making me realize we had some unfinished business we started earlier in the barn, and by the look on his face right now, he planned on finishing that business.
