Chapter 74-2

Chance was almost to the top step, when he began to stumble, taking a knee, making me race down the last couple of steps to help him. As I threw his arm around my shoulder to help him stable himself, I asked him, What happened to you?

It’s nothing.Chance said, before he gave out a grunt of pain as I tried to help him to his feet.

Don’t lie to me. I can clearly see that something happened to both you and Chase. Was it the rogue wolves? I heard your grandmother say something about wolfsbane.

Chance remained silent, as I helped him the rest of the way up the stairs and down the hallway to his bedroom. It wasn’t until I laid him down on his bed, did I see the black veins running down his arms, through dried blood that coated his flesh.

Running to the adjacent bathroom, I grabbed a washcloth, soaking it down with warm water and soap, before I grabbed a towel and raced back to his bedside. Quickly, I went to work removing the dried blood from his flesh, exposing even more veins branching off the ones that I could see through the blood.

I wasn’t, no damn doctor, but I knew this didn’t look right, and most of all that it wasn’t good, as it looked as if whatever was in his veins was trying to make its way to his heart. Moving my hand to Chance’s forehead, it was clear that he was running a fever, as it felt like his flesh felt like it was on fire and coated in perspiration.

Chance let out a moan, and I could clearly see that he was not in a good state, but if he was like that, how bad was Chase that his father needed to carry him home? Moving back to the bathroom, I grabbed another washcloth, but this time drenched it in cold water, to place it on his forehead in the hopes of helping bring his fever down. But as I place the cold washcloth

on his head, I clearly notice the black veins moving up Chance’s arms.

Placing a kiss on Chance’s cheek, I whispered to him, Hang on. The doctor should be here soon. Before, I raced out of his room, and down the stairs to let the others know what was going on with Chance. But as I enter the living room, I right away see Chase’s halfnaked body laying motionlessly on the couch, covered in the same damn black veins as Chance, but much worse.

My hand moved to cover my mouth, as shock and confusion took over, while I wondered what the hell was happening to them. The only thing that made sense to me was that they had both been poisoned, but what kind of poisoning would have done this?

I don’t know why, but tears at that moment began to form in my eyes, as I stood there watching Chase struggle to take his next breath, while his grandmother held a washcloth to

his head.

Removing my hand from my mouth, I stepped forward, tears now seeping from the corners of my eyes, as I asked, Is Chase going to be, okay?

Just as I asked, Cash walked into the living room with his head down as he said, The pack doctor is on his way. He said to try and keep his fever down until he gets here to stop the wolfsbane from spreading.

As Cash’s head rose, his eyes widened, seeing me standing there, while their grandmother grabbed the blanket Chase had been wrapped in, covering his body so that I couldn’t see the dark veins beneath his flesh. But it was too late, because I had seen them not just on him but

Chance too, now making me wonder how bad this poisoning truly was.

Seeing the tears in my eyes, Cash moved to my side, wrapping his arms around me as he said to me, Don’t worry, Chase will be okay. He’s one tough cookie. Why don’t you go upstairs and rest with Chance?

Shaking my head, I stepped away from Cash’s embrace as I said to him, Chance is infected with whatever this poisoning is too.

What?Their grandmother said as she turned to look at me, and I nodded my head to her, before I admitted to her, Chance has the same dark veins. He is also running a fever. That’s what I came down here to tell you, but ChaseI broke off, not able to finish my sentence, as I stared at Chase’s pale face, the only thing now visible with the blanket now wrapped around

him.

Cash, go check on your brother.Their grandmother cried out, while she held Chase in her arms, as I was sure by the fear in her tone, she was reliving the loss of her own son.

With tears now sliding down both their grandmother’s and my cheeks, she reaches a hand towards me to take. Taking her hand into mine, she gave my hand a squeeze, before she pulled me towards her and Chase and said to me through her tears, They say that a fated mate has the ability to help heal her mate. I know that may sound foolish to you, but here in Beaumont, we believe in such things. So, could you please humor an old lady that believes in old superstitions, and hold my grandson’s hand, to help give me a piece of mind that he is going to make it.

How I was I to tell her no, even though I knew that Chase himself wouldn’t want me to touch him. After everything she had gone through all those years ago with her son, I couldn’t deny her this one small request with her grandson.

Reaching down, I took Chase’s hand into mine, doing just what she had wanted me to do, but as his hand laid flush against my own, a jolt of electricity surged through my body, straight

into Chase. His chest rose from the couch, as if he had been hit with a surge of power straight to his heart, giving it a jump start.

Chase’s eyes flew open, as he gasped, taking in a deep breath, all while his hand now clinched tightly to mine. Mrs. Ryder’s hand, at that moment, moved to Chase’s forehead, wiping his hair from it, as she stood over top of him, while she cried out, Thank you for your blessing.

I had no clue who she was thanking, but I was now questioning this whole mate thing and what it truly entitled, as Chase’s eyes moved from his grandmother to mine, realizing it was my hand that he was holding. I went to pull my hand away, knowing that he wouldn’t be happy I was this close to him, but as I pulled my hand away from his hand, his grip around my hand tightened, telling me that he wanted me to stay by his side.
