Chapter 75-2

My shoulders cringed as Cash not only drew my attention to him, but also made Evan turn to see me standing at the corner of the porch, eavesdropping on his conversation. Cash moved to my side, wrapping a protective arm around me, as I continued to stare off the porch towards where Evan stood, wondering who the hell he had been talking to, because he was the only person now standing there.

Cash was quick to follow my line of sight to see his father standing off the side of the porch, making him ask his father, Is everything alright, father?

Evan’s eyes locked onto mine, while they slowly narrowed, as he said to his son, Everything is going to be fine. Just take Raven back into the house where it is safe.

Cash tightened his arm around me, as he moved to steer me back into the house, doing as his father asked, while I looked over my shoulder at Evan, realizing that he was hiding something not only from me, but from his sons too. I had no clue what had poisoned both Chance and Chase, but what I did know was that it had to do with the secret the elders were keeping around here.

Stepping back into the safety of the house, like Evan had said to me, I brushed Cash’s arm off my shoulder, before I took off for the stairs, realizing that Chance had taken off last night after our conversation. He had obviously stumbled across something in his mix of searching for evidence, and I needed to know what he had found. But as I entered his bedroom, I realized that the poison had further spread, and he was now in worse shape than Chase had been.

I didn’t even hesitate as I crawled into bed with Chance, wrapping my arms around him, pulling his body close to my own, as I prayed that this crazy ass bullshit, his grandmother spoke of to be true. Chance’s body radiated immense heat from the poisoning, telling me that his fever had gotten worse in the little bit of time that I had been downstairs, making me realize I should never have left his side.

Holding his body tightly against my own, I closed my eyes and began to pray to whatever higher power would listen to me, as I realized that Chance was now on the brink of death all because of me. Tears began to seep from my eyes, dampening his already perspiring flesh, as I laid my ear flush with his chest, listening to his heartbeat. With each beat of his heart, I hung onto the hope that he would hang on until the doctor got there, so he could give him an antidote to counteract the poisoning.

I felt the bed dip, before I heard Cash say to me, Raven, Chance is the strongest of us all. I promise you he will be fine.As his hand began to rub my leg to soothe me.

I knew that Cash was trying to comfort me, but right now the only one I wanted to be comforted by was Chance. I wanted him to open his eyes, kiss my forehead like he always does, and then whisper in my ear that everything was going to be okay, but unfortunately, I didn’t foresee that happening.

Feeling discouraged, I was just about to give up on the whole mumbojumbo bullshit that I somehow held the power to heal my socalled mates, when I felt Chance’s body stir beneath my own. Too afraid to move, in fear that I had imagined it, I lay there still, waiting to see if he would move again, as I held my breath, listening to his steady heartbeat skip a beat.

As if Chance was able to read my previous thoughts, I felt his body shift beneath mine, leaning down into me, placing a gentle kiss on my forehead, before he whispered to me, It’s going to take more than a little poisoning to kill me, baby girl.

My eyes popped open, and I leaned my head back, to see Chance’s eyes finally open. They weren’t their old brilliant selves, but they were open, and his color was slowly coming back to him, making me now a believer in the power of this whole mate thing we all had going on.

A vehicle door shutting at that moment drew all our attention to the open window in Chance’s bedroom, making Cash stand from the bed and move towards the window to see who was

there, while I lay in Chance’s arms, not daring to move from his side until I knew that he was

going to be okay.

It’s the doctor.Cash says with a sigh of relief in his voice as he turns to look at us.

Make sure he takes care of Chase, and only once he is out of danger, have him come up to address me.Chance tells Cash, almost sounding like he was giving him an order.

Without questioning his brother, Cash leaves the room to do as his brother asks, leaving the two of us alone in his room. With my head still lying against his chest, Chance begins to run his fingers through my hair, as he says to me, I think I may have found out what the elders are hiding.”

Pushing up off his chest, I looked down now at Chance, realizing that he had found the answers I had sought, but that he had paid dearly for them and so did Chase. Just as Chance opened his mouth to tell me what he had found, Evan came walking into his room, with a displeased look on his face, making Chance close his mouth, as his eyes narrow looking at his father, like the two of them were in a showdown.

I had no clue what the hell was going on between the two of them, but by the look on each of their faces, whatever Chance had uncovered, I had to believe that it had something to do with his father. By the looks of things, I wasn’t going to have to wait long to find out, as Evan grabbed a chair, pulling it to the side of the bed, like he wanted to talk.

Sure enough, Evan says, I think it’s time that we all had a little talk about the past, and about your mother.
