As if Cash could feel my anxiety, he grabbed a hold of my hand, giving it a squeeze to let me know he was here with me. Like always, Cash’s touch somehow soothed me, taking the edge off my anxiety just enough, giving me the strength to move forward.
With my eyes on the front door, I resumed my ascent up the steps, this time not paying attention to the creaking sound that was coming from beneath my feet, as I held on tightly to Cash’s hand. The main front door was open, as the screen door was shut, giving me a clear line of view into the living room.
My eyes inadvertently moved to the recliner chair that my grandmother always sat on, but unfortunately it remained empty. Instantly, I began to wonder where the hell she could be, because she was always sitting in that chair, especially at this time of day, watching the
evening news, and then her game shows.
Reaching passed me, Cash opened the screen door, stepping inside the house before me. I watched as the tension in his body relaxed as he looked around the living room, but as I stepped inside the house to follow him, I noticed he tensed back up when he looked towards
the hallway.
“Raven, stay here.” Cash said to me, as he went to move back to the hallway towards the bedrooms, but I unfortunately didn’t do as he said, as there once again was no way in hell, I was going to be separated from him.
But as we moved back the hallway to my grandmother’s bedroom, I wished I had listened to him, because when he opened the door, I wished I hadn’t seen her in the state she was in. Frozen in fear, I just stood there in the doorway, while Cash moved to my grandmother’s side, kneeling beside her motionless body on the floor, checking her for a pulse, as he called out to me, “Raven, call an ambulance.”
Instead of doing what he asked me to do, I just stood there, staring at my grandmother’s body, as flashbacks of the night I lost my parents came flooding back to me, as if walls that I had put up to protect myself came crumbling down. Tears began to sting my eyes, as I watched from what felt like a far away distance Cash beginning to do CPR on my grandmother, while I just stood there, frozen in my fears.
“Raven. Raven!” Cash called out to me, and his voice sounded so muffled, as a ringing sound began to ring in my ears, while my head felt like it was going to explode, making me grab onto the doorframe for support, before I slid to the floor, bringing my knees up to my chest, making myself as small as I possibly could.
Through the ringing in my ears, I could still faintly hear Cash’s voice, but it was now so

muffled, I could barely hear a single thing he was saying, as he continued to do CPR on my grandmother, while I watched through my tear–filled eyes. Everything remained a blur as I sat there on the floor, leaning against the wall, even when the paramedics arrived, pushing their way into the tiny bedroom to help my grandmother.
It wasn’t until I felt Cash’s arms wrap around me, did I pull somewhat from the haze of fear that took over me, as he helped me to my feet while the paramedics loaded my grandmother’s body onto a stretcher. My hands shook as Cash held tightly onto them, while my tears continued to flow freely from the corners of my eyes.
I watched them remove my grandmother from the house on a stretcher, with a breathing apparatus attached to her, while Cash held me now closely to his chest, as I barely heard the paramedics telling us what hospital they were transporting her to. Thankfully, Cash had remained cool and calm this whole time, and I knew if it wasn’t for him, my grandmother
would never have stood a chance at making it.
Honestly, I was never really good at stressful situations like this, but after the accident, things had gotten so bad that it felt like the littlest of things triggered me. This here made me realize that I was nowhere near recovered from the trauma that I had suffered, and if
anything, I felt like I was starting all over again in the healing process.
Standing now on the front porch with Cash’s arms wrapped around me, we watched the ambulance drive away, while I continued to lean on Cash for support. When the ambulance disappears from our sight, Cash leans down and places a soft kiss on my forehead, before he says to me, “Love, let’s get you something to wear, and pack you a bag. Your grandmother isn’t going to be coming home anytime soon, and you are not staying here alone. With everything going on, I think it is best if you stay at the ranch with all of us, so we can ensure your safety.”
He wasn’t going to get an argument out of me, as I didn’t want to be alone, not after everything that had happened, and especially knowing that these rogue wolves had somehow tracked me to my home. Grabbing a suitcase, I began to toss clothes in it, really not caring what I took, as long as I had something to wear of my own. It only took me a minute before I had it full, and I was more than ready to get the hell out of this house, as something began to feel off to me.
Night was beginning to fall upon us, and as Cash helped me out to my car, throwing my suitcase in the trunk, I couldn’t help but feel like we were being watched. It wasn’t until Cash got into the driver’s seat, turning on the car, making the headlights turn automatically on, did I see the reflection of the red eyes within the forest by the pine trees.
Those eyes were the same eyes that had haunted my dreams for nights, and I knew exactly who they belonged to. But instead of saying something to Cash, because I knew he would do

something foolish, and I couldn’t have him get hurt either, I just sat there in the car, watching
them staring back at me, as Cash turned the car around and drove us away.
