The doctors had ruled Ms. Wilson’s diagnosis as a heart attack, but I wasn’t convinced it naturally came on, as the Alpha rogue’s scent lingered more potent in the air at her house than anywhere else in our territory. Thankfully, Raven had calmed down once her grandmother was in stable condition, and as she sat at her grandmother’s bedside in the ICU unit, waiting for her grandmother to be transferred to her own room, I excused myself to try and get in touch with someone back home.
Unfortunately, the wolfsbane or what the pack doctor was giving my brothers hindered any kind of communication between us. It was the first time in eighteen years that I couldn’t sense them or feel that they were close by, and to be honest, I hated it, because I felt like a part of me was missing.
Stepping outside the hospital, I pulled my cell phone out of my pocket, calling our house phone number, as all my previously sent texts had gone unanswered. There was no doubt in my mind that my brothers were both in the mix of sleeping off what was left of the wolfsbane in their system, with the help of the pack doctor, but I had a situation on my hands
that I needed to inform someone back home of.
Thankfully, after a couple of rings, my grandmother picked up the phone, but as I asked to speak to my father or someone to help me, I unfortunately was met by the fact that I was on my own for the night. My father was now missing in action, and both my brothers were so drugged up that they passed out for the night.
Knowing that I needed to find my father or second best, his Beta, my pointer finger hovered over my phone screen just above Mazie’s number, as I found myself debating on whether she would even answer my call after the way I had left things between us at City Hall. It was crazy for me to even be feeling this way, as Mazie had always been there for me, but today I was now realizing that I had dismissed her and her thoughts like they meant little or nothing to me, making me realize that I was a horrible friend to her.
With no one else to turn to, I knew I had to face my actions from this morning towards Mazie, but as I tapped on her phone number, I found my call being sent straight to her voicemail. Not knowing what else to do, or who to even turn to for help, I left a message for Mazie, apologizing to her for my behavior, before explaining the situation I had on my hands.
Ending the message with how sorry I was, I placed my phone back in my pocket, while I felt hopeless and frustrated, as I stared up at the moon now hanging high above my head, realizing how late at night it must be. I prayed that was the reason Mazie wasn’t answering my call, and that she would hopefully get back in touch with me, because I needed her right

Not wanting to leave Raven alone too long, since we weren’t in my pack’s territory, but on unclaimed land in the neighboring town that had a hospital equipped to take care of Ms. Wilson and her condition, I took a deep breath, telling myself that I got this. But as I step back inside the hospital, I am greeted by a doctor that I can clearly sense is one of my kind.
“A word, young Alpha, in private, about the elderly woman you are with.” He says, formally greeting me, letting me know that he knows who I am, as he ushers me away from the hallway that leads towards Ms. Wilson’s room.
When I heard the paramedics say they were bringing Ms. Wilson to this hospital, I sort of felt relieved knowing that she would be out of the grasps of my kind, but now I wasn’t quite sure that was the case. Her wellbeing now seemed to be in the hands of a wolf, one that was not under my jurisdiction, putting me even more on the edge than I was from the start.
