Chapter 79-2

As the doctor led me to his office, I took note of the name plate on the wall outside his door, before following him inside, watching him closely as he moved around his desk, taking a seat behind it, while he offered for me to do the same. Not knowing where this conversation was about to go, I opted to stand, maintaining my independence for a quick dismissal if need be.

“Very well.” The doctor said as he typed something into his computer, before he looked at the screen and said to me, “Normal protocol for bringing one of our kind into this hospital is to warn our chief of staff of their arrival, but since this was an emergency and Ms. Wilson’s condition is rare, and she is only a halfling, we are going to let this slide. Thankfully, I was the doctor assigned to her, and I was able to coverup her test results, deeming them as

contaminated.”

My eyes narrowed while I stared at him, wondering if I had heard him correctly, as one single word came from my lips, “Halfling?” questioning now if I was hearing him right, as it had been one hell of a day.

The doctor raised his head from looking at his computer screen, as his eyebrows furrowed, before he said to me, “I am sorry, but yes, she is a halfling. It’s obvious that you didn’t know this, but I can assure you that the Alpha gene is very much present in her DNA. Unfortunately, it’s clear by the small drops throughout the pattern that one of her parents was a human.”

My hand reached for the back of the chair for support, as I processed what he was telling me, while I realized that Mazie was right. Raven was one of us and had the blood of an Alpha running through her veins, exactly what Mazie had been trying to convince me of this morning at City Hall. Little did I know that Ms. Wilson’s trip to the hospital was going to be the proof and evidence that Mazie had been searching for, to acquit herself of the accusations against her of not protecting her luna–to–be.

I should have known that Mazie would never leave Raven behind on her own accord, and I was foolish about even questioning her loyalty to me and the pack, but most of all, her loyalty to Raven.

“Now, as for Ms. Wilson’s condition, I am afraid that I don’t have good news. It seems that all these years her wolf’s side has laid dormant within her, unable to be freed and developed. Her wolf DNA has been chiseling at her human DNA for many moons, trying to free itself, but has failed, and in the process has taken a toll on her heart and body. Honestly, if it wasn’t for her strong Alpha heritage, I don’t think she would have lived as long as she has.”

Holding onto the chair for support was no longer enough, as my mind began to process what the doctor was telling me. Of course, I was devastated to hear that Ms. Wilson was in bad shape, but she had lived a pretty long life, and my main concern was Raven and what this

meant for her.

Taking a seat, I slumped in the chair, not caring how an Alpha is to present himself, as my sole concern right now was about Raven and if she too was going to experience issues with being a halfling. Needing answers, I asked the doctor, “Is this genetic? Will Ms. Wilson’s kin have the same fate as her?”

The doctor removed his glasses, laying them on his desk, before he folded his hands in front of him and said to me, “Each case, I assume, would be different, depending on if her kin were able to embrace their wolf or if it laid dormant within them. Honestly, I would have to run some blood tests, along with checking their hormone levels, which is something that I think the whole family should do as a precautionary measure.”

“How soon can you have the results?” I asked him, hoping that he could soothe my worries tonight by testing Raven’s blood.

“I would need a full panel analysis, so I would say two to three days, give or take. I could take your blood tonight if you would like me to run it.” The doctor offered me, but I shook my head at him, before I admit to him, “She is not of my blood. Ms. Wilson is my Luna–to–be’s grandmother. Who, by the way, doesn’t know our world exists.”

I moved at that moment to stand, realizing that I was in, way over my head, as I wished that

Chance was here right now with me. Frustration began to take over me, as I tried once again to reach out to him, wondering what the hell I should do, but found myself hitting a wall of

static once again.

“I could be discreet about taking her blood, telling her that I needed to see if she was a match for her grandmother just in case a blood transfusion was needed.” The doctor now offered me, and I felt torn about what to do, as I felt like I was deceiving Raven once again.

For the first time in my life, I was being forced to make a decision on my own, and wouldn’t you know it had to be a decision for our precious mate behind her back. Knowing that Chance would do anything to protect Raven, I made my decision based on what I thought

both of us would think was best for her.

“Do whatever is necessary but keep her unaware of our world for now.” I told the doctor, while I moved to the door, feeling the need to get back to Raven, as my wolf felt on edge, especially with what I had just learned.

This was definitely not how I planned on spending my night with Raven, but I was glad though that she at least let me in her heart before all of this went down. At least now, I was able to go to her and comfort her like a mate, and that was exactly what I was going to do, as I knew she was going to need me more than ever, knowing her grandmother’s true diagnosis.
