Chapter 80-1
Raven’s POV
For hours, I held my grandmother’s delicate hand in mine, realizing that I never truly let her into my heart. Despite all her attempts to get to know me, I had kept her at arm’s length, too scared to allow myself to get attached to her, knowing that eventually she too would leave me in this world alone, with no one else left from my blood to turn to.
Originally, when I heard that they were going to be moving my grandmother from the ICU to a private room, I felt hope that she was out of the woods and going to be able to recover from this. But when we finally made it to her new room, I was quick to realize the reason why she had been moved.
Between all the medical devices they had her hooked up to, and the constant morphine drip into her IV, it was clear that they were just trying to keep her comfortable until the inevitable came. Although the doctor didn’t seem to be giving up on her, I was optimistic, even when he asked for a sample of my blood to see if we were a match, in case my grandmother needed a blood transfusion. Of course, I gave it willingly, but in my heart, I knew that it wouldn’t stop death from coming for her.
Thankfully, through all of this, Cash stayed by my side, reinsuring me that I wasn’t alone. Honestly, if it wasn’t for him, and the mere touch of his hand in mine, I’d probably be hospitalized right now myself, as it was the only thing that kept me afloat from losing my shit all over again. Somehow, his touch kept me grounded, while I held onto what little sanity I had left, as it seemed like everyone in my world was leaving me.
My head now leaned against Cash’s shoulder as the lack of sleep now was beginning to take hold of me. I sat there just staring at my grandmother’s chest slowly rising and falling, while I listened to the steady beeping of the machines that she was hooked up to. My eyes felt heavy, as the hours began to pass by, and I was hanging on by a thread to stay awake.
A foreign hand on my shoulder startled me, making me lift my head from Cash’s shoulder, as the kind nurse that had been taking care of my grandmother says to me, “Ms. Knight, it has clearly been a long night for you. We have your grandmother stabilized, and the results from the other test that we have run on her won’t be back for hours. I would suggest that you go home and get some rest, and I promise you when her results come in, we will call you right away with them.”
My head turned back to look at my grandmother lying in the hospital bed like she was at peace, and it was clear that she was stable for now. She didn’t look like she was in an ounce of pain, and I took comfort in knowing that, but I didn’t know if I could just leave her, knowing that this could be the last time I saw her alive. But as I turned to look at Cash, it was clear

that the lack of sleep and stress was getting to him too, making me realize that neither of us were going to be any good if something happened and my grandmother would need us.
Nodding my head, I moved to get to my feet, letting go of Cash’s hand as I moved to stand over my grandmother’s bed, placing my hand over her chest, feeling her chest rise as if to assure me that she was going to be okay while we were gone.
Cash got to his feet, wrapping his arm around my waist, as he leaned down and whispered to me, “She is in good hands.”
Nodding my head once again, I knew that he was right, that this was the best place for her to be, but I honestly had a bad feeling about all of this that I couldn’t shake. Honestly, I felt like it didn’t matter if she was here or at home, because when it is your time, it doesn’t matter where you are, death will find you.
