I gave my grandmother’s hand a squeeze, as I silently promised her that I would be back, before Cash and I left her hospital room, heading outside to see the sun beginning to rise.
“I’ll get the car. Wait here.” Cash said, leaving me at the main entrance, near a bench, as he made his way into the parking lot adjacent to the hospital.
I would have thought the fresh air would have given me a burst of energy from being cooped up in the hospital all night, but it did quite the opposite, making me take a seat on the bench as I tried to keep my eyes open, knowing we had a long drive home.
As I sat there watching the sunrise, with my eyes growing heavy, I felt a vibration in my pocket, making my eyes pop back open, while I reached clumsily in my pocket for my phone. I didn’t even bother to look at the caller ID before I answered it, knowing that it could be only one of four people that had my phone number in Beaumont.
“Oh, thank the goddess, you answered your phone. What is going on? Is your grandmother okay? I swung by your house, and you aren’t here.” Mazie says to me with extreme worry in her voice for me, but I was now the one more worried about her.
“Mazie, are you at my grandmother’s house now?”
“Yes, and someone left a glass of milk sitting out all night long. Do you know how bad that smelled? Don’t worry, I dumped it and cleaned the glass out…” Mazie says as she continues to babble on, not stopping long enough for me to get a word in edge wise, but I just wish she would stop because I needed to warn her.
Mazie finally took a breath, giving me my chance to speak, and with concern in my tone, I said to her, “Mazie, you need to get out of there. It’s not safe.”
“What do you mean by it’s not safe?” She asked me, and I knew that I had to tell her what I had seen before Cash pulled out of my grandmother’s lane last night.
“I believe the rogue wolf tracked me somehow to my grandmother’s house. I spotted his distinctive red eyes last night in the darkness, before Cash pulled away from my grandmother’s house.” I explained to Mazie, but as I told her this, I realized that my grandmother, being in the hospital, could very well be my fault, as this rogue wolf could have been the cause of my grandmother’s heart attack.
“Does Cash know what you saw?” She asks and, unfortunately, that was a hard no, as all I wanted to do was get to my grandmother to make sure she was alright.
In all honesty, I had forgotten about the rogue wolf until Mazie had called, since I had been

“No one knows but you. So, can you please get out of there before something happens to you too?” I pretty much begged her, because I couldn’t bear the thought of something happening to her too.
Mazie remained silent at the other end of the call, worrying me that something was happening, but then I heard the sound of her car door unlocking, telling me that she had done exactly what I had asked her to do.
As soon as her door shut, I could hear her car start up, connecting our call through her car’s speakers. “I am leaving your grandmother’s house now and heading over to the Ryder’s ranch to speak to Chance.”
I let out a sigh of relief, knowing that Mazie was safe, but my mind took another turn, as I wondered how Chance and Chase were doing. So much seemed to have happened in such a small amount of time, and it was no wonder why I was hanging on to my sanity for dear life.
“Cash and I are getting ready to head back to the ranch now. They have my grandmother stabilized and told us they are just waiting for test results now. We are heading home to get some much–needed rest, before they call us with the results.”
“I’m so sorry, Raven. Is there anything I can do for you?” Mazie asked, and I knew that she would do anything for me, but what I needed now was pretty much a miracle, something I knew she was unable to give to me.
“Thanks, Mazie. You just being here for me as my friend is more than I could ask for.” I told her, as it was the next best thing to a miracle.
“Always. I will see you when you get back. Be careful driving home.” Mazie tells me before the call ends, just as Cash pulls the car to a stop in front of me, making me realize that Cash and his family, along with Mazie, are the closest thing I have to family right now.
“Are you okay?” Cash asks, as he moves around the front of the car to open my door, with so much love and compassion in his eyes for me, that I had to wonder what I did to deserve
him.
I gave him a soft smile, as everything was far from being okay, but having him here with me right now made everything that was wrong in my life bearable. As he helped me into the passenger seat, there was no doubt in my mind that I could see myself being a part of his unique world, as I knew there was no way in hell I could go back to just being friends with him, now seeing him for who he truly was.
