Chapter 82-2

I don’t know how many times my father and grandmother told me that there was nothing I could have done to save her, as I didn’t have my wolf just yet back then, but in my heart, I felt like I had failed my mother as a son. I was definitely what you would call a momma’s boy, and I had been the only one with her the night she was murdered, but unfortunately, those memories of that night remain a blur in my head.
Everything had happened so fast that I honestly don’t even truly know what happened. My father to this day blames it on rogues passing through our territory, but now with Raven being attacked, I had to wonder how true his story was. I believed it was the reason I was so hell–bound on protecting Raven from the rogues, as I felt like this was my way of redeeming myself for not being strong enough to save my mother.
Unfortunately, last night, when I tried on my own to seek that revenge out, I realized quickly that this group of rogues that were hunting Raven were a totally different breed of rogues, as I never expected to be bested by them. If it wasn’t for Chance coming to my rescue, I would be as good as dead right now, and I hated the fact that I owed him one.
Worst of all, I hated the fact that I craved Raven’s touch yesterday and allowed myself to indulge in it and use the healing aspect of our mate bond to take away my pain. That was until Jessica arrived and brought me back to my senses. But right now, standing here in the doorway to Cash’s room, I didn’t have Jessica by my side to stop the temptation of wanting to feel Raven willingly in my arms again.
My knuckles were visibly turning white, as I held tightly onto the doorframe, holding myself back from going to her, as she purred slightly in her sleep. Raven now stirred, rolling onto her side, exposing a bandage on her arm that was to be covering her wound, from when she had been attacked at the cemetery. But the bandage had lost its grip, and was slowly unraveling, revealing perfectly smooth skin beneath it.
Letting go of the doorframe, I stepped inside Cash’s/room, wondering if my eyes were playing tricks on me, as I moved to the bedside, leaning down over Raven, taking a better look at her arm. Sure enough, there were no signs on her flesh that she had been attacked, leading me to believe that Raven had to have a wolf within her, because there was no other explanation.
Thankfully, from what I had heard, her birthday was this weekend, and with any luck, her wolf will show itself, leaving all this worry about her health in the past, so that we could all focus on what was really going on around here.

We had not just any Alpha rogue on our hands, but the Alpha Rogue King, himself. I had been trying for days now to track his damn ass, but he somehow roamed our territory like a ghost, only showing himself when he deems fit to, which seems to be when Raven is around, making me wonder what the connection could be. I mean, I knew that Raven’s family was killed off by the Alpha Rogue King back in the day, but why after all these years of wolfless kin would he come back for her?
I guess none of that really matters as long as we keep her safe, keeping our family promise to Alpha Wilson all those years ago. It now made sense to me why Ms. Wilson lived peacefully on our lands, and was never bothered by our pack members, as I wondered how many of them knew that she was one of us.
My eyes remained staring down at Raven while I pieced it all together, and I couldn’t refrain myself, from removing a strand of her hair from her face, tucking it back behind her ear, as I let my knuckle slide delicately against her perfectly smooth flesh. Raven stirred beneath my touch, making me retract my hand, as I moved to leave the room, not wanting her to know that I was here.
Chapter 82
But before I could exit Cash’s bedroom, I heard Raven’s voice say, “Chase, is that you? Are you okay?”
† froze in my tracks hearing her voice, but most of all, I couldn’t believe that she was worried about me and my wellbeing after everything that she had been through. I was at war with myself about whether I should just walk out of the room and ignore her, just like I normally do, but after yesterday, I felt it hard to do so.
Slowly I turned to look at Raven, which was the wrong thing to do, because when I looked into those deep brown eyes of hers full of pain, all I wanted to do was take it away.
