Chapter 87-2
Chase looked away from me, as if he didn’t want me to see the look on his face, making me wonder what he was hiding from me, but it was Chase, and he was full of secrets, secrets that not even his own brothers knew about. Hell, half the time no one in his family even knew where he was, and most of the time they think he is with Jessica, when I know that isn’t the truth from the conversation that I overheard in the bathroom between Jessica and her friend. To be honest, I was curious where he was always sneaking off to, but I knew that it wasn’t any of my damn business either.
“The real Dr. Larson left his appointment book sitting out on his desk. Thankfully, the man was excited about taking a vacation, and had it written at the top of the calendar in big bold print.” Chase says to me, without turning back to look at me, as if that explained everything, but it didn’t.
It was definitely a good observation on his behalf, but it didn’t explain how he knew that the doctor was crooked and responsible for the heinous things that he had done, which leads me to my next question.
“Chase, who hired him? I remember him saying that someone hired him. Who would want my grandmother and me dead?”
Chase shook his head, as he slowly turned back to look at me, while he said to me, “Honestly, I don’t know, but I wish I did, because this would probably solve our million–dollar mystery about what is truly going on back in Beaumont.”
My head tilted slightly to the side as I stared at him, realizing what he was insinuating. Maybe Ms. Jacobs was right and that I needed to leave town, as it seemed as if death was following me, but there was no connection between Josie and I. It had me wondering if I truly was the reason behind all of this, and if I was, then why was she the first to be murdered. My mind then went to how Josie was found in her uniform, and I realized that Josie wasn’t the intended target, as it was obviously supposed to be Mazie.
“Shit, we need to get back to Beaumont. Mazie isn’t safe.” I told Chase as I hopped back into his jeep, feeling the need to make sure that she was okay, because I would never forgive myself if something happened to her.
Honestly, I don’t know why I didn’t see this all before now, as it was right in front of me this whole time. All those that had died all those years ago were classmates of my mother’s, and I was sure that if I looked them all up, that they would all probably be present in the pictures she had taped to her vanity.
It was clear now what Ms. Jacobs was talking about, as all those around my mother had died, but after she left town all the deaths stopped. That was until death itself found her ail those years later.
Chase just stood there with his eyebrows furrowed as he stared at me, probably wondering what the hell I was talking about, but he needed to get in the damn jeep and start driving us back home.
“Just get in, and I will explain it all to you on the way back.” I told him, praying that he wouldn’t put up a fight, and thankfully he didn’t, as I was sure he wanted to get back home just as badly as I did.
As he pulled back onto the highway, he said to me, “Care now to tell me what is going on?”
“I know you are all saying that Josie was killed by this rogue wolf, but I’m not so sold on that. I believe that whatever killed Josie, messed up, and that Mazie was the intended target. It’s just a matter of time before whomever murdered her realizes they killed the wrong girl, and I can’t allow this person to hurt her. It’s clear that Ms. Jacobs knows what is going on, and I need to talk to her as soon as we get back.”
Chapter 81
“So, let me get this straight. You think Mazie was the real target, and you think Ms. Jacobs knows why this is happening. Why would she know?”
“Because her brother was murdered all those years ago, alongside your uncle, before my mother left town.
Chase turned his head to look at me, and it was clear that he knew something, but by the look on his face he wasn’t going to elaborate. Instead, he put the petal to the metal, and this time I didn’t bitch at him about how fast he was going, because I knew Mazie’s life was at stake.
