Chapter 90-2

“No, this can’t be.” Their grandmother said from behind me, as I stared at Chase, wondering why that was all he said to them, before he began to walk away towards the barn.
Standing there in shock, I watched Chase walk away from all of us, while Cash threw his arms around me, pulling me into a tight embrace, as he whispered into my ear, “I am so sorry, love, for your loss.”
I took comfort in Cash’s embrace, but I couldn’t help but look over his shoulder at Chase walking away, knowing that we all needed to sit down and talk about what happened at the hospital today, but by the looks of it, that wasn’t going to happen. At least not at this
moment.
It was clear that Chance’s accusations of him doing something to me had thrown Chase back into his old self, leading him to walk away like he always does. I was beginning to see now what was going on between the three brothers, and I was also having my eyes opened to see the reason why Chase was acting out, like he was.
All three of them had different personalities, but on top of that, they all handled things differently. Unfortunately, I was beginning to see that Chase was the one that took things more to heart, and it was clear that he was still suffering over the loss of their mother, just like I was with my parents. Unfortunately for him, he had two brothers that were constantly on his case, and I could see why he was doing everything in his power to defy them.
But right now, it wasn’t the time for him to take one of his fits, because right now, I needed him more than ever. I didn’t know remotely where to even start to explain to them what happened at the hospital, and this was something that we couldn’t just keep a secret from
everyone.
Pulling from Cash’s embrace, I stepped back off the porch and took a few steps towards the barn, as I yelled out, “Chase, stop! Don’t do this right now. I need you.”
Chase paused in his step, but it was only for a second or two. At first, I thought he was going to turn around and stand by my side, explaining to his family what had happened, but unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. Instead, I could have sworn I heard the wind carry in my direction an “I am sorry” from him, but then again, I was probably just imagining it, wishing that he had finally come around. But as he began to continue to walk away from me, I realized that the time we had just spent together didn’t change a damn thing between us, even though I was secretly wishing that it had.
Chance was the one that stepped off the porch, wrapping his arms around me, as he said to me, “Let’s get you inside. I can’t even imagine how you are feeling right now.”

As he began to guide me into the house, I couldn’t help but still peer over my shoulder, wishing that Chase would change his mind, as I really thought the two of us had a breakthrough. Unfortunately, that breakthrough was obviously short–lived, as Chase disappeared into the barn without even turning back once to look at me, leaving me to feel like a part of my heart was being ripped out, as I felt like he was just tossing me to the side.
Lowering my head, I let Chance guide me inside the house and into the living room, as their grandmother disappears into the kitchen, while Chance, Cash, and Mazie sit in a circle around me. It felt like they were putting me on observation like I had been on in the juvenile mental facility after my parents had died, making me feel a bit uncomfortable.
“I am so sorry that I wasn’t here for you when you needed me.” Cash says, apologizing to me, as Chance chimes in saying, “Me too.” Before Mazie also added, “Me three.” As it was now clear that they were feeling guilty leaving me, but they hadn’t left me alone, as they had left
me in Chase’s care.
Honestly, I was grateful that it was Chase that had been with me, because he was the least of the three of them trusting others, and that I believed was the reason I was still alive right
now.
“I can’t even imagine how hard this has to be on you. I wish one of us was there with you to comfort you.” Mazie now says to me, as she reaches over, taking my hand into hers, acting as if Chase hadn’t been with me.
I couldn’t believe that I was now getting upset with them all, as they were all dismissing the
fact that I wasn’t alone and that I had Chase with me.
“One of us should have stayed here with you. I don’t know what we were thinking.” Chance then says, adding fuel to my fire, making me stand up abruptly, before I said out loud, “I wasn’t alone. I had Chase. And even though I know it’s hard for the three of you to believe, I am alive right now because of him. You have no clue what I have been through today with him, and if you did, you wouldn’t have accused him of doing something to me.”
The three of them stared at me with widened eyes, and I don’t know if it was from my sudden outburst, or if it was the fact that I just stood up for Chase, but either way, all this bitterness and arguing between them all needed to stop. If I had any hope of figuring out who was behind my grandmother’s murder, along with who had killed Josie, and was out to kill everyone around me, I needed us all to get along, and I needed all of us on the same page with no more secrets.
