Chapter 95-2

I could have sworn I heard a low growl come from behind us, making me pull away to see Chance and Cash staring at Jacob like they wanted to rip his head off. It took all had to hold back a chuckle that was now resonating in my gut, as I realized that these two were jealous. Jacob was the boy in the picture they had seen on my phone, and for all they knew he was my boyfriend from back home. A part of me wanted to tell them the truth, but I was enjoying the look on their faces right now a bit too much, as it was clearly payback time for them searching through my phone.

“I get that it’s my birthday, but why are you guys here?” I asked them both now, wanting to know why on earth they would come here, after all the time that had passed.

“It was supposed to be a surprise. We have been talking to your grandmother for the last week about it.” Lexi tells me, and tears instantly form in my eyes, knowing that my grandmother was involved in bringing them here.

Mazie must have sensed my pain, because she moved to my side, wrapping her arm around me, as she broke the news to my California friends. “Raven’s grandmother passed away today.”

“Shit.” Came from Lexi’s lips, as she took a step back from me, while Jacob said, “Damn Raven, I’m sorry.”

More tears formed in my eyes, and I don’t know why, but all the pain of losing my grandmother was now hitting me at once. It was like the gates to my sorrows had been opened, and it felt like there was no way to shut it off, as I knew I needed to just let it all out.

“How about we move this inside.” Cash says, as he now moves to my side, and Mazie steps away, making it very obvious that she didn’t want to be too close to him.

Clearly there was something going on between the two of them that I had missed, as neither of them ever wanted to look at each other. Since the day that I had arrived here, they easily could have been mistaken. as a couple, as they were closer than any two friends could be, but right now, they were like two strangers not wanting to breathe the same air.

Moving back around the side of the house. Mazie moves to the front door to open it, while I linger behind to check on Chance to make sure that he was alright from Lexi’s assault on him. As the three of us slowly made our way to the front porch, I realized that my friends from California were about to see how I was living my new life. I had literally gone from riches to rags in a matter of no time, and here my friends from back home were about to see firsthand what poverty looks like.

Chance at that moment leans down and whispers into my ear, “Just say the word and I will send them packing.”

I closed my eyes at that moment and took a deep breath, knowing that he wasn’t too fawned about them being here, especially after what Lexi had done to him. But in her defense, he sort of did tackle Jacob to the ground, and she thought she was trying to protect him.

Placing my hand on Chance’s chest, as an act to reinsure him, before I said to him, “No, it’s fine. I just haven’t seen them since the accident. Plus, if I am being honest, it was really nice of my grandmother to want to surprise me for my birthday with them coming here. So, I can’t just send them packing.”

“Actually, you could.” Chance says blandly as he glares at Jacob, and I just wanted to laugh, knowing at that moment he was jealous of him, when in reality, he did not have a damn thing to worry about.

I stopped at the bottom of the steps, while Mazie ushered my California friends inside the house, as I wanted to set a few ground rules with Chance and Cash before we headed inside. For one, I needed them not to let my friends know about the little arrangement that their family had with taking a single mate. I could only imagine that would be the talk of my old school when Lexi and Jacob returned to California with the news of me dating more than one brother at a time, and I knew that I couldn’t allow them to find

out.

It wasn’t that I was ashamed of what I was doing, it was just that it was different, and I didn’t want to be judged for my choice of lifestyle. Although Lexi and Jacob were probably the last two friends of mine from back home that would judge me about it, as they lived their lives the way they wanted to.

I was just about ready to ask Chance and Cash to keep this between us, when an ear-piercing scream streamed from inside the house, making the three of us turn on our heels and race up the steps towards the front door. As we stepped inside, I quickly turned away from the sight, burying my head into Cash’s chest, as Chance stepped around us towards my grandmother’s corpse, which sat peacefully in her favorite chair.
