Chapter14-1

Raven’s POV

Even though I had lost my appetite, I finished my plate just to make their grandmother happy, and to be honest, it was the best home–cooked meal that I had in a very long time. As the boys finished their plates, they took them to the kitchen, and I began to help their grandmother clear the table, not wanting her to have to do all the clean–up herself. When the table was cleared, I insisted on helping her with the dishes,

knowing that it was the right thing to do, especially since she was the one that had asked me to stay for

dinner.

As I washed the dishes and she dried them, she said to me, “This reminds me so much of the days when

your mother would help me. She was a sweet girl, just like yourself, I was positive that she and my Evan were meant to be, but she took off, not even saying goodbye to any of us. My Evan was so heartbroken, 1

never thought he would move on after losing her.”

I knew my mother had left this place to better herself, but I didn’t know that she had run off, not telling anyone that she was leaving. It made me wonder if something had happened between her and Evan to cause her not to say goodbye, but even if something did happen, it didn’t explain why she wouldn’t have

said goodbye to others before she left.

With curiosity getting the best of me, I asked her, “Do you, by chance, know what happened to cause her to

leave here? I mean she always told me it was for a better life, but it wasn’t like my mother to run off,

especially without saying goodbye.”

“I wish I knew child. Maybe she would still be here today with us if she hadn’t, but then, of course, I

wouldn’t have my grandsons, and they wouldn’t have you. Maybe it was written in the stars to be this way.”

“What? No. We aren’t together.” I told her as I shook my head, thinking of the possibility of staying here and

being with one of them, but that wasn’t written in the stars for me, just like it wasn’t for my mother.

Their grandmother sat the dried plate on the counter before she turned and looked at me, saying with a

serious look on her face, “You can’t tell me that you aren’t the slightest bit interested in them. I saw the way you looked at them, especially Chance, and I could see how much he already cares about you.”

She was right, they all piqued my interest, especially Chance, but I had to be honest with her. “Your grandsons are definitely interesting, and you’re right about Chance, but I can’t allow anything between us to flourish other than friendship, because I have plans on leaving here myself once my senior year is over.”

“Oh, I didn’t know that you were planning on leaving, and so soon. Your grandmother never mentioned that to me.” She said as I handed her another dish, lowering her head, as if my leaving was affecting her, just like my mother’s had.

“Yeah, I really haven’t discussed my plans with my grandmother yet, but it’s nothing to do with this place, it’s just that I got an early acceptance into Berkeley, and it has always been my dream to go there.”

“Wow, you not only got your mother’s looks, but you also got her brains. Your grandmother and I would talk

every month, and she would tell me how your mother was doing. She was so proud of your mother and her accomplishments in life. I can’t fault you for wanting to follow your dreams, but always know all roads lead back to Beaumont, and you will always have a home here.”

A smile formed on my face, as I knew what she was trying to tell me, but I honestly had no intention of coming back here once I left. My plans now were to finish high school, head to college, and once I graduated with my degree, I had all intentions of moving back to the place I called home my whole life.
