Chapter14-2
Was there a possibility my plans could change? Sure, there was, bot a part of me felt like I needed to stick to the plan that my parents and 1 had for my future. It was the only reakthing that I had left of them, and even though they were gone, I wanted them to be proud of me.
As the water drained from the sink, I wiped it out, before retrieving the rubber gloves she had given me to protect my hand that I had cut, while I said to her, “Thank you again for dinner. I really enjoyed our conversation and spending time with you. I can see why my mother enjoyed coming over here.”
“Will you promise to come back?” She asks me as she reaches towards me, placing her hands on my shoulders.
“I don’t know. Are your family dinners always crazy, like tonight?” asked her jokingly, letting out a chuckle, before I gave her a kind smile, saying to her, “I would love to come back.”
Their grandmother pulled me into an embrace, taking me off guard, as she whispered to me, “Please give my grandsons a chance.” Before pulling away, giving me a smile, as I smiled back at her, wondering what she meant by giving “them” a chance.
Bidding their grandmother goodnight, I stepped outside, hoping to find Chance, and take him up on his earlier offer, to take me home, even though I had rejected him the first time. With everything that happened tonight, I couldn’t help but now trust him, especially when he stood up for me at dinner, but i
knew that I owed him an apology for my earlier behavior towards him.
It didn’t take long to find him, sitting on a rocking chair on the porch, as if he had been waiting for me.
Moving to the chair beside the one he was sitting on, I took a seat, as I looked off the porch at the beautiful view of the ranch, surrounded by the mountains. Now that the rain had stopped, and the night sky dimly lit the landscape, it was one of the most breathtaking views I had ever seen.
“It’s beautiful here.” I said out loud, speaking my thoughts, as I couldn’t hold in its beauty to myself.
Chance remained silent, slowly rocking on his chair, not responding to what I just said, as he stared straight ahead. I was beginning to wonder if his mood had changed once again towards me, but then he asked me, “Is it true that you plan on leaving here after graduation?”
I turned, staring at him, wondering if he had been listening to the conversation between his grandmother and me, but it didn’t matter if he was, because he needed to know eventually that was my reason for keeping him at arm’s length. Knowing that I needed to be honest and completely transparent with him so that he knew where I stood, I finally said to him, “Yes, I plan to leave here and go back to where I feel like belong, and follow my plans and dreams that I had before…” I trailed off, not able to finish my sentence as speaking of my parents’ deaths was too much for me to bear.
His head turns to look at me, with the look of sadness in his eyes, as he says, “Before your parents passed. “Finishing my sentence for me, before he asks me, “Is this something that they wanted for you?”
Shaking my head, I said to him, “Yes. They were so proud of me when I got my acceptance letter into

Berkeley. I just feel like I need to make sure that Amake them proud even though they aren’t here with me.” “So, is this your dream or was this theirs for you?”
I stared at him, as Fremained-/silent, while! thought about what he had just asked. Ever since I could remember, the plan had been for me to go to Berkeley, since it was not far from our home. My mother had gone there for her masters, and that was where she met my father With both my parents being alumnus, it was just natural for me to dream about going there.
“I honestly never really thought about it before now, but I guess it is a little of both.”
Chance got to his feet at that moment, as he said, “Then who am I to stop you from fulfilling your dreams.” As he walked towards the edge of the porch, before he said, “I’ll take you home now. That’s if you are willing this time to accept my offer.”
“About that.” I said as I got to my feet, moving to the edge of the porch, as he walked down the steps. “I’m
sorry about earlier. I overreacted, and I shouldn’t have thrown you under the bus like that to your
grandmother.”
“It’s water under the bridge.” He tells me, as I step off the porch, moving towards him, while we begin to
walk towards his truck.
As he opened the door for me to get in, a smile formed on his face, making me tilt my head to the side, wondering why he was smiling like that at me, but then he said to me, “But you sure do look good in my tee shirt.” Making me slap him across the chest, as a smile forms on my face, before I got in the truck, while I called him a smart ass.
