Instead, I was on Cash’s horse, the one that I had truly learned how to ride on, and as I raced to catch up with Evan, I felt confident in my riding skills, as I felt like I was in control, something I hadn’t felt in a long time. If anything, this ride was exactly what I needed, as I had forgotten how free it made me feel.

As we made our way towards the mountains, Evan slowed his horse just enough to make sure that I was right behind him, before he took the same path that Cash and I took to the waterfall. It had me wondering how close we had been to the wolves‘ den, the day we had gone for a ride, but as we made our way halfway up the side of the mountain, Evan veered off the beaten path, steering us in a totally different direction.

I took my time following him, as Evan continued to look back, checking on me to make sure I was still behind him, but Cash’s horse was honestly doing most of the work for me. It was as if Cash’s horse knew this path well, and I felt confident in allowing him to take control of following Evan’s horse, well I just rode along for the ride, wondering now how far into the mountains the wolves‘ den was.

Of course, I knew that their den had to be hidden within the mountains, away from all human eyes to see, but as we continued to move up the side of the mountain, the ranch became a faint blur in the far distance.

“It isn’t much further.” Evan says to me over his shoulder, as if he could read my mind, but I was sure it was my antsiness that had given my anticipation and nervousness away.

We only got a few feet further up the side of the mountain after Evan announced we were near, before a stream of howls began to carry in our direction. At first, my heart began to race in my chest knowing that we were nearing the wolves‘ den, but as the howls continued, it felt like the howls were calling to me.

Closing my eyes, I listened to what sounded like a trio of howls, and I couldn’t help but feel like something was pulling deep at my soul, like the day at the cemetery when I was attacked. It was like something inside of me felt a connection with them, as if I knew that these were the good guys, verses the ones that were out to kill me.

Evan brought his horse to a halt in front of me, before he dismounted the horse, while he said to me, “We are here.”

I brought Cash’s horse to a halt, as I looked around at completely nothing. Honestly, I had no clue what I was expecting. Maybe a cave on the side of the mountain or somewhere that the wolves would be able to hide from the world, but that was much more than what I was seeing in front of me right now.

Instead, all that lay in front of me was a rocky mountainside that led up to the peak of the mountain, making me realize how hard this land had to be to maneuver. In a way, I guess it was the perfect spot to have a den, as you wouldn’t have to worry about humans venturing their way onto the land.

“Here, let me help you down.” Evan said, taking the reins from my hands, as he leaned in beside the horse, giving me his free hand to help me down.

As Evan moved to tie Cash’s horse off to the tree, I took a step towards the massive boulders and rocks that protruded out the side of the mountain, as I began to cautiously look around. Moving toward an extremely large boulder, I began to realize why the wolves had picked this spot, as there were various nooks and crannies they could hide within.

Clam

A–howl rang out once again, but this time it had come from behind me, making me turn quickly on my heels, but as turned to see where it was coming from, I froze in fear, as I realized that Evan was no longer

standing behind me.

Seeing enough horror films in my time, I called out to Evan just above a whisper, as I moved back towards the horses, wondering if he somehow was just standing on the other side of them where I couldn’t see him. But as I made my way to the horses, it was clear that he was no longer here with me.

My heart at that moment began to race in my chest, as fear hit me that Evan had abandoned me out here alone with a pack of hungry wolves. I hated to think the worst of Evan, but at this point, I had no clue who I could trust anymore.

For all I knew, he too wanted to get rid of me, just like Mrs. Jacobs did, but unlike Mrs. Jacobs, who wanted to put me on a flight back to California, Evan seemed to be wanting to take a permanent approach to the matter, getting rid of me for good.
