Chapter 108-1
Raven’s POV
Clairs
The trio of howls that I had heard earlier began to ring out once again, echoing through the boulders, telling me that the wolves were hidden somewhere within them. My entire being felt torn at that moment, as my mind was telling me to get back on the horse and take off as fast as I could back towards civilization, while another part of me once again felt drawn to what sounded like a call from the wolves, drawing me to them.
Standing there behind the horses, I peered around the side of the one towards the boulders, as my eyes scanned the territory in front of me, looking for any signs of movement. Unfortunately, I spotted nothing, forcing me to try to see if I could hear anything, but the only thing that I could hear was the thumping of my heart beating rapidly in my chest.
Why the hell would Evan bring me here and just leave me? It didn’t make sense, especially since his horse was still tied to the tree with the one that I had ridden here. Plus, where the hell was Chance? He was the one that had offered to bring me to the wolves‘ den in the first place, and here he was nowhere in sight.
Frustration and anger began to take over, and if I got out of this alive, Chance was going to get an earful from me. Evan on the other hand, well, I was never going to trust him again, unless his butt showed back up soon, to protect my ass.
Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted the slightest movement, making me turn towards a boulder that sat aside from the rest of them. Taking a step away from the protection of the horses, I peered around the side of it, catching the faintest glimpse of silver fur disappearing around the backside of it.
It was at that moment that I realized that if these wolves were going to attack me, they probably already would have, as I was sure that I was far outnumbered by them, at least three to one that I knew of by the howls. Instead, they were keeping within the shadows, hiding within the protection of their land, probably just as scared as I was right now.
Foolishly, and I mean foolishly, because I had no clue how this was going to pan out, I stepped completely around the horses, moving back to the foot of the boulders, in plain sight so that they could see me, and hopefully sense that I wasn’t a threat to them.
Taking a seat on one of the smaller rocks, I faced the mountainside of the boulders, hoping that maybe my silver wolf friend from the cemetery was among this pack. Something told me if he was, then he would be the one brave enough to show himself to me, which in turn would somewhat put me at ease, knowing that he was here.
As I sat there on the rock, I nervously began to hum a song my mother used to sing to me when I had a nightmare. I remembered how the song used to calm me instantly, but I quickly realized once I started to hum that it wasn’t the song that she sang to me that put me at ease. It was her voice and her presence and the way she held me protectively in her arms that made me feel safe and untouchable as long as I was with her.
But that didn’t stop me from humming it, as it reminded me of her, and that was enough to make me feel like I wasn’t sitting here alone, in the middle of the damn woods in front of a den of wolves that could possibly have me for lunch. Honestly, I had nothing to lose, other than my life, and lately I was realizing that death wasn’t ready for me, as it had its chance on more than a few occasions to take me.
Se, crazy as it may sound, I decided to hum even louder, blocking out the silence of the forest, which scared me more than hearing the howls, as I had no clue where within the boulders the wolves were hiding.
