But before Cash could answer my question, a low growl echoed in our direction, drawing Cash and my attention towards the group of naked men. With both our eyes on the men, clearly seeing that the peaceful conversation that they were having was about to come to an end, Cash says to me, “Maybe it’s best if we head back to the ranch first before I begin to answer all your questions. I would feel a lot better knowing that you would be safe first.”

I thought about putting my foot down and demanding answers right now from him, but as another low growl echoes in our direction, I had to agree that the ranch was a much safer place for me to be right now. Nodding my head to him, I began to turn the horse around to head to the ranch, but as I did so my eyes remained on the men talking to Evan, and one of their heads turned at that moment to look in our direction.

Even though I couldn’t see his eyes directly on me, I could feel them burning a hole right through me, sending a shiver throughout my entire body, making me want now to run as fast as I could back to the ranch. It was crazy how the unsettling feeling just hit me out of nowhere, and it was as if I knew that this man was a foe.

With that unsettling feeling moving to the pit of my stomach, I held on firmly to the reins, as I nudged Cash’s horse with the heel of my shoe to run, leaving Cash and especially that man behind me. But only a few seconds passed before the silver wolf appeared running directly by my side, as if he was my personal escort once again back to the ranch.

So much was now running through my mind, as I began to piece things together, with the little time I had on my hands to think clearly. The one thing that was apparent was that the silver wolf that I had met in the cemetery first had to have been Chase, but what I couldn’t understand was why he was nice to me in his wolf form, compared to how standoffish he was to me as a human.

It had me wondering if they were in total control in their wolf form, or if their wolf was a separate part of them all together, with their own mind to think for itself. Either way, I now looked at Chase differently, as I had seen another side of him, a side that I wasn’t sure that too many people had seen before.

advantage of me, but he had proven me wrong today. Then again, maybe it was his wolf that was in control and had exposed his belly to me when it had seen how scared I was of him at first sight. This was definitely a question that I was going to have to ask Cash, as I felt like I needed to know who is in control while they are in their wolf form.

Thankfully, I didn’t have too much more time to think as the ranch came into view, and ! looked over to see Cash’s wolf still running stride for stride with his horse. As if he could sense that I was staring at him, he turned his head, and I could have sworn his damn wolf winked at me, before he took off like a bat out of hell, running at what looked like the speed of light, leaving me in his dust.

His horse didn’t even break its stride, but just kept on at the same pace, heading straight towards the barn as if it knew what it was supposed to do. When we finally arrived back at the ranch, Cash stepped out of the barn just as he had this morning, in nothing but a pair of gym shorts.

Gradually, Cash’s horse slowed his pace before coming to a halt right in front of him, as a huge smile formed on his face, while he began to pet his horse all while telling him, “Good job boy.”

Reaching up, Cash moved to take the reins from me, but I hesitated for a moment to hand them over, really not wanting to give up my freedom. Cash’s face fell as he realized that I had pulled away from him, but I honestly didn’t really mean to do it to upset him, but instead, I did

it out of instinct.

With a hurt look on his face, I slowly handed Cash the reins, before I moved to dismount his

horse, while I looked around to see if anyone else had made it back to the ranch. Unfortunately, by the looks of things, neither Chance nor Chase had returned, and Mazie was no longer here either, as her car was now gone.

I began to wonder if she had taken Jacob and Lexi with her, or if she had left them behind. But as I thought about that, my stomach twisted into a knot, as I wondered if Mazie too was one of them. But I didn’t have to wonder for too long, because Mrs. Ryder steps out onto the porch at that moment with an extremely worried look on her face, as she calls out to Cash.

My heart sank in my chest, as it was apparent that something was majorly wrong, because ! had never witnessed their grandmother look as frightful as she did at that moment. I raced to the house, following right behind Cash, wanting to hear what she had to say, but when we approached the porch, Mrs. Ryder just looked at Cash as if they were somehow secretly having a conversation.

“I know you all are werewolves.” Came abruptly from my lips, making both Cash and his grandmother turn to look at me, before a smile slowly formed on her face.

I don’t know what I was expecting from me blurting out that I knew the truth about what they were, but it was more on the lines of whatever she was secretly telling Cash what was wrong. Instead, what actually came from her lips I never in a million years would have expected.

“Then you must know that you are one of us too.” Their grandmother blurted out like it was no big deal, making me stumble two steps backwards before I caught myself, thinking maybe I might want to rethink the part where I thought I wasn’t going crazy.
