Chapter126-1

Raven’s POV

Pushing the curtains slightly to the side, I peeked out through the front window and watched the three of them have a brief conversation, before Mazie and Lexi got into her car and drove away. Chance, on the other hand, stayed behind, and he peered back at the house before he took off towards the tree line.

I stood there at the window watching him until he disappeared into the shadows of the forest, now wondering if I was foolish about sending them all away, but it was too late to change my mind at this point. Taking a deep breath, I turned around to face Jacob, only to find him doing something on his phone.

What are you doing?I asked him, knowing that whatever he was up to, it seemed off.

Jacob didn’t even bother to raise his head, but instead he just peefed his eyes up at me, as he said to me, I am ordering us an Uber back to California, so we can get the hell out of this twilight zone.

The thought right now, honestly felt tempting, but I knew I couldn’t run from all of this. My mother had done it when she was my age and look where that got me. I knew if I didn’t stay and fight along by their sides, then I would just be putting the lives of my future children in harm’s way, as it seemed to be a vendetta that just wasn’t going to go away.

I am sorry Jacob, but you are going to have to make that an Uber for one, because I can’t leave here.I told him, as I walked past him towards the kitchen, needing to make myself a glass of warm milk, especially after the day that I had.

Jacob immediately follows me into the kitchen, and I didn’t even get a glass out of the cabinet before he says to me, Raven, seriously? This place, these people, none of this is normal. I should have known those bulk tan muscles of theirs were too damn good to be true.

I couldn’t help but chuckle, as I should have known that would be what was on Jacob’s mind, but as ! thought about those bulk tan muscles of the Ryder brothers, I couldn’t help but think that there was nothing wrong with them, and that they all three were perfect the way they were. I mean, Chase had his issues, but once you busted through the pain he holds from losing his mother, I could see a gentle side to him. As for Chance and Cash, those two would do anything to protect me, and right now, that was exactly what I needed.

Moving to the refrigerator, I pulled out the carton of milk and poured it into my glass, all while i said to Jacob, And those bulky muscles of theirs is what is going to keep me safe. if I take off back to California with you, what is not to say that these rogue wolves won’t follow us? If they do, what the hell are you or I going to do to protect ourselves from them?

Shit, I never thought about that. Do you think werewolves fly? I mean on planes?Jacob asked, and I shook my head at him, before I turned, placing my milk in the microwave, thinking that I would be doomed if I left here with him.

I loved Jacob with all my heart as my friend, and I knew that he would do anything for me, but the one thing I was sure that he wouldn’t do was die for me. Unfortunately, right now, it seemed I needed people around me that were willing to put their lives on the line for me, just as I was willing to do the same for thern.

Pulling my milk from the microwave, I sat it on the table, as I moved to the kitchen cabinet to retrieve the

When he finished chugging it, he sat the glass down, wiping away his milk stash, before he said to me, Itoo young to die. Plus, never got to tell Jhonny Raymond that I have a crush on him.

I closed my eyes at that moment, trying not to lose it. It wasn’t that I was going to flip out on Jacob, but that I was going to laugh so hard at what he had just said. It was funny to think that before I had come here, these were the small things that I worried about, but now, being here, I realized that none of that shi back home even matters in the smallest way.

Taking a deep breath, I open my eyes, and a smile slowly forms on my face, as I take in Jacob’s appearance. His hair is completely tousled, something that I have never seen before, because the man always has to have every strand in place. Not only was his hair a mess, but his shirt was also half untucked out of his pants, leaving him an absolute eyesore.

Even looking like hell, he was still here sitting at my deceased grandmother’s kitchen table with me, scared out of his damn mind, but he was still here, and that was exactly what I needed right now. I needed a distraction from what was going on outside these walls, and i needed to think of the little things that didn’t mean jack shit, compared to the real shit that we had at hand, at least for tonight.

Opening the cookie jar, I handed Jacob a cookie, and he looked at it before he popped it into his mouth, while he says with a full mouth, I am guessing these aren’t gluten or sugarfree.

Shaking my head, I chuckled, as I said back to him, No Jacob, they aren’t, but times like this call for desperate measures. Before I moved to pour myself another glass of milk, popping my own cookie in my mouth, not giving a shit about my girly figure.

The two of us sat at the kitchen table for what felt like hours, talking about everything and anything that I had missed back home in the last two months, but not once during the conversation did we revisit what was going on here in Beaumont. It felt good to take my mind off the craziness, even if it was just for a

brief moment.

Jacob’s eyes were growing heavy, and he began to slur his words. If I hadn’t been drinking out of the same carton of milk, I would have thought he was drunk, but instead, he was just beyond exhausted. Being a good hostess, I gave my bed up for Jacob to sleep in, knowing that I wasn’t going to get much sleep myself.

With a blanket and pillow in my hand, I made my way out to the living room, placing them on the couch, before I moved to the door to make sure that it was locked. Peering out the small window at the top of the door, I scoped out the front yard, looking to make sure nothing was lurking.

Honestly, I had no clue what the hell I was even looking for, because I had no means to even defend myself if there was. For someone having a torture chamber under their bedroom floor, I was surprised by there being no firearms inside the house, and to be honest, it was strange for living in the sticks like this.

I would have thought that my grandmother would have at least had one stashed somewhere in this house that was possibly left behind by her father. I was sure that everyone in this neck of the woods were adamant hunters, and it would have been a cheap way for my grandfather to supply his family with meat, since they struggled financially. But I had looked all through this house, and even in my grandmother’s room, and there wasn’t a damn thing that I could use to defend myself other than a cast iron frying pan.

A sigh of relief was just about to slip from my lips, thinking that the coast was clear, when I caught a

glimpse of something moving out of the corner of my eye. My heart instantly began to race in my chest, as Tstepped to the side of the small window, leaning up against the cool metal of the door, as I found myself

too afraid to look back outside.

Closing my eyes, I pressed my ear against the door, trying to listen for movement outside, but the damn sound of my heart beating in my chest was the only thing I could hear. I was just about to give up on hearing anything when a creak filled the air, and unfortunately, I knew that creak all too well.

Normally, I wouldn’t be thankful for the rundown porch and steps outside, but right now, I am thankful for them, as I knew whatever was outside was making its way onto the front porch. Opening my eyes, I looked around the living room, looking for anything that I could wield in my hand to protect myself, but once again I was coming up short of anything that could remotely be used as a weapon.

Looking down by my feet, I noticed an old pair of my grandmother’s boots that looked like they hadn’t moved in a year. Bending my knees, I leaned down, trying not to make a sound, as I picked one of them up in my hand, realizing this was a poor excuse for a weapon, but what else did I have in arms reach, other than them.

As I moved to stand back up, I now could hear someone or something on the front porch, and I knew that they were only feet away from me. My heart was now pounding, and my hands were shaking, as I realized that there was only a door that now stood between me and whatever was outside lurking in the night.

Leaning back once again against the door, I tried to steady my breathing, as I continued to listen to the footsteps drawing closer, until they came to a halt right outside the door. My breath at that moment hitched, as I found myself holding it, waiting to see what would happen next, while I tightened my grip on my grandmother’s single boot in my hand.

The door handle at that moment began to jiggle, and I quickly looked down at it, praying to God that it held, because just like everything else in this house, it was in desperate need of being replaced. Thankfully, the person on the other side of the door must have realized that it was locked, because they stopped their efforts to open it.

Footsteps on the front porch once again filled the air, and I closed my eyes, listening to them, visualizing in my head where the individual had moved to. It didn’t take me long to realize what the hell this individual was up to, as I knew they were in the proximity of where my grandmother hid her spare key.

Stepping away from the door, I raised my grandmother’s boot in the air, as I waited for whomever was

outside to let themselves in.
