Moon Phased: The Triple Claim novel Chapter 25

Chapter16-2

As I sat there alone in the truck waiting for him to get in, I licked my own lips, still able to taste him on them, while I closed my eyes, remembering how he made me feel, as images of his lips on mine flashed before my eyes. The sound of his door opening made tre quickly open my eyes, pushing back those images that were playing in my head, as he started the truck.

The drive to my grandmother’s house was done in silence, as I stared out the window, not daring to glance over at him. I was afraid now that I had started something, something that my heart wanted, but I knew it couldn’t have, but then he knew my plans for leaving before he kissed me, making me wonder if he too needed to feel a connection with someone but didn’t want strings attached. Maybe if this was the case, then this might just work for us, and I wouldn’t have to push him away or feel guilty for eventually leaving Chance brought the truck to a stop outside my grandmother’s house, turning the engine off, before we both got out of the truck. As I walked around the front of the truck, he met me halfway and slowly began to follow me to the front door with his hands tucked in the front pockets of his pants.

The moment was awkward, as I didn’t know what to do or say after the moment we had shared, because I honestly didn’t know what this was between us. If I was being honest with myself, if the situation was different, and I was still back in California with my parents alive, there would be no doubt in my mind that I would want him to be a part of my life, and to see where this thing between us would lead. But unfortunately, we weren’t in California, we were in Beaumont, and it was clear that he had no plans on

leaving here, just as I had no plans on staying.

When I reached the front door, I knew I had to turn and face him, at least to thank him for the ride home,

but as I turned to face him, to give him a mere thank you, he was the one to break the awkward silence by saying, “Things don’t have to be weird between us. I know that you are planning on leaving, and you are afraid to break my heart, but my heart is already shattered. I really think we should just go with the flow

and see where this takes us.”

I stood there contemplating what he had just offered me, as he made it clear to me that he knew where I stood, along with verifying to me that he was just as damaged as\I was.

I must have stood there too long without responding to him, because he then said, “And if not for that, then you know that it would piss Jessica off.” As that devious smirk of his, forms on his face.

The last thing I wanted to do was to piss her off, but after tonight and the way she had treated me, it would be nice to put her in her place. Even though the thought of it was compelling, I couldn’t base my answer to him on that. If I was going to agree to this, then I needed to be in it for the right reasons, and I needed to realize that even though he said his heart was shattered, both of us could eventually get hurt.

Needing time to think, I asked him, “Can I sleep on it?”

The smirk on his face slowly began to fall, as he nodded his head, before he stepped towards me, placing a gentle kiss on my forehead. As he stepped back, he said to me, “Take all the time you need.” Before he walked away from me, moving towards his truck.

Lstood there on the front porch, watching him drive down the lane until he had disappeared from my sight, as I wondered if this thing between us could really work, or if I was a fool for thinking that it could.
