“You’re unreal. You truly think that I would do anything to hurt my own pack?” He asks me, clearly upset with me, but I honestly never thought of it that way.
Now it was my turn to be on the defense, as I took a step towards him, trying to reach out to him, while I said to him, “No, but Chase, you have to understand that you haven’t been the kindest to me since I arrived. With the way you have treated me, why wouldn’t I think that you could possibly be involved in trying to run me out of this town?”
Chase takes a step back from me, not allowing my hand to reach him, while he shakes his head at me in disbelief, all the while he says to me, “I would never purposely hurt you. As for me wanting you to leave town, I still do, because I would know that you were safe and away from all of this.”
My hand fell to my side, as I stared at him confused. It was the first nice thing that he had said to me since I had arrived here, even though it wasn’t put in such a nice way. At least I now knew that he would never hurt me, but unlike his brothers, it was clear that he still wanted nothing to do with me.
I couldn’t understand why his countless rejections of me were like a new stab wound to the heart every time they happened. By now you would think that I would be numb to his refusal to have anything to do with me, but each time I am reminded of it by him, it is like a new flesh wound is opened.
Throwing my hands up in the air, giving up completely, because honestly, I was in way over my head here, and I was tired of all the pain I was feeling in my heart, I turned away from Chase, and began to walk away from him, as I said, “You’re right, I should take Mrs. Jacobs up on her offer and leave town. Then you would be happy that you were finally rid of me, and you could have Jessica as your mate, and convince your brothers to accept her too, so you can all live happily ever after.”
The word “after” was barely from my lips, when I felt Chase grab a hold of my hand, spinning me right back around. But I just didn’t spin around to face him, but I landed face first in his chest. Chase’s hand reaches for my chin, and he slowly lifts it so that I am looking up at him, before he says to me, “There is no Jessica and me anymore.”
My eyes blinked a few times as I stared up at him, shocked by his confession. Never did I believe I would hear those words come from his lips, but most of all, never did I think that! would be standing here in Chase’s embrace right now either.
But what shocked me the most is what came next.
