Chapter 17-2
“It’s nothing a little paint and nails can’t fix.” He tells me, as he grabs my book bag from my shoulder, while he begins to walk towards his truck as he continues to say, “I’m sure that Cash and I can have it looking better in no time.”
I froze on the sidewalk, shocked by what he had just said, wondering if he truly meant that Cash and he would be willing to work on it. I had a monthly allowance that I was now given each month, from a trust fund left behind by my parents. If I was smart with my monthly allowance, then I could very well help my grandmother out fixing her house, which would be the least I could do for her, since she had taken me in. Chance opened the passenger door, before he realized that I wasn’t directly behind him, as he gave me a confused look, while he asked, “Have you already changed your mind?”
Shaking my head, I walked towards him, getting into the passenger seat, as I said to him, “No. I haven’t changed my mind.” But the ride to school wasn’t the only thing I was referring to, as I had never been so sure of accepting his offer he had proposed to me last night, then I was now.
Chance took his time driving down my grandmother’s lane, as he tried to avoid the bumps, unlike his brother had had the morning before. The two of them were clearly like night and day, and if it wasn’t for their looks, I would never have known they were brothers. Cash and Mazie I believed had it all wrong yesterday when they warned me about Chance, as it was clearly Chase that I needed to be worried about. Thus far, Chance has been nothing but nice to me, other than the little episode at the waterhole, which I now can see was clearly my fault.
Bringing the truck to a complete halt at the end of my grandmother’s lane, he put the truck in park, before he turned to look at me, as he says, “I’m guessing you made your decision after you slept on it last night.”
Unfortunately, there wasn’t much sleeping involved, and I was definitely going to pay for that later today, but right now, I was wide awake in his presence, anxious about telling him what I had decided. Looking away from him, I took a deep breath, as I tried to calm my nerves.
Even though I knew my answer was what he was wanting to hear, it was a big step I was taking with him, and to be honest, a part of it scared me, knowing that I was altering my plans that I had set forth before I had come here. But as I turned back to look at him, I realized why I had decided to take the leap of faith with him, as I could see in his eyes how much he wanted this.
“Actually, I had a hard time sleeping last night, as all I could do was think about you, and the moment we had shared. I can’t deny the connection I feel towards you and the sense that you actually get me. I honestly don’t know if it’s the loss we have both suffered, or if it’s something greater than that, but what I do know is, I can’t deny that there isn’t something between us.”
Chance looked at me as a soft smile formed on his face, before he said to me, “I too can feel the strong connection between us from the moment I met you, but I didn’t want to scare you away. Honestly, I was worried when I heard my grandmother talking to you about the stars.”
“You heard that?” I asked him, as I realized that he had heard everything that I had also said to his grandmwther
“Unfortunately, I heard everything, even the part about our parents once dating”
“Ah, yeah about that. I sort of figured that out the day I arrived. My mother had left behind pictures of her and your father. It isn’t going to make things weird between us, is it?”
Chance shook his head, as he says, “What happened between our parents is ancient history, nor do I care to talk any further about it. What I care about is you and wanting to make this work between us.”
“I want that too.” I confessed to him, as a huge smile was plastered on his face, from me finally agreeing to his offer.
“Then it is settled.” He says to me, as he puts the truck in drive, before he reaches over, taking my hand into his, showing me my first preview of what I had signed up for, and to be honest, I was already loving it.
