But you speak of our grandfather.I said quickly back to her, wanting her to know that the excuse she had been using all these years wasn’t flying by me no longer, as I knew there were other reasons that they didn’t speak of the dead.

My grandmother takes a deep breath, as she drops the rolling pin from her hand while she stares blankly down at the dough on the island. Clearly, I had upset her, and this was the last thing I wanted to do, but I needed answers.

Knowing that I had to push her to talk, I took my own deep breath, before I said to her,Grandmother, I know that you all made a pack not to speak of what happened all those years ago, but don’t you think that my brothers and I have the right to know what happened so that we can protect ourselves and our mate. We can’t allow history to repeat itself.

It’s far too late for that. She then says to me, as she plops the cinnamon filling down on top of the dough and begins to spread it, not daring to look up at me, but I knew by her not leaving the room that she wanted to say something.

Patiently, I sat there waiting, hoping that she would finally open up to me, but instead, she began to sing the song she had been singing when I had entered the house softly to herself. For a moment, I thought that maybe this all had been a lost cause, but then, for the first time in all these years, I began to listen to the words that she sang, realizing that this whole time she had been trying to secretly tell us all something.

Honestly, I don’t know why until now that I hadn’t questioned the tune, but I guess until now it didn’t make sense to me. When they say that you must walk a mile in someone’s shoes first to know what they have been through, this was that moment for me, as I now know what pain my grandmother had endured, and why she leaves the past right where it was.

It had nothing to do with a pack she had made, but with the fact that she wasn’t my grandfather or uncle’s fated mate. I honestly don’t know why I hadn’t thought about it until now, but if Raven’s mother had been my father’s and uncle’s fated mate, and then Raven ours, it seems as if they weren’t the first of our bloodlines to try to unite our two families together.

It now had me wondering how far back the rejections had occurred between our ancestors and made me begin to question if my own mate bond was at stake. One thing I knew was that I wasn’t going to give up so easily on Raven, and that I was going to make her see that we belonged together. But I now was scared if I even stood a chance with Raven or if my grandmother’s and father’s fate was to be my fate too.
