Chapter 142-2
For one thing, I hated heights, and for two, I think that maybe I might just want to take my chances with the creature eating me rather than me taking the chance of surviving the fall. Unfortunately, though, it didn’t seem as if Mazie was going to allow me to take my own chances, because as another growl rumbled even closer towards us, she dug her heels into the ground and took off running straight towards me.
Mazie didn’t even give me a second to respond to her, but in a way, I think it was for the best, because before I knew what was happening, Mazie’s arms were wrapped around me, sending us flying over the edge. As my body went sailing backwards, my eyes spotted a pair of massive glowing red eyes, emerging from the forest, sending a chill throughout my body.
Unlike the rogue’s red eyes that had tried to attack me, these ones were much larger, and the thought of what was attached to them scared the living shit out of me. But unfortunately, right now, that wasn’t the only thing instilling fear in me, as I closed my eyes, praying to God that I made the fall.
Once again, Mazie had me cradled in her arms, and I knew that she was going to try and take the blunt force of the impact, but it didn’t make the situation any better. If anything, it made it worse, because I knew once again Mazie was putting her life on the line for me.
Unfortunately, this was nothing like the fall out of my grandmother’s house that seemed to last forever, because this one here didn’t even give me time to brace for the impact, as we hit the raging rapids of the river as if we were hitting a brick wall. Mazie’s hold around my abdomen instantly released on impact, and I opened my eyes, as I found myself completely emerging underwater.
Quickly, I made haste to open my eyes, but I could barely see a damn thing underwater, as it was flowing far too fast, carrying all sorts of debris with it. I did my best, trying to reach the surface, and when my head finally rose above the water, I gasped for air, taking a deep breath, before I was swept right back under the water again.
It was taking every ounce of energy that I had left inside of me not to give up, as my body banged off sharp rocks beneath the surface, sending a wave of pain throughout my body, while the current continued to carry me downstream. My body began to try and fight the current, as it started to become deprived of oxygen, and I knew that I was barely hanging on to consciousness, as I felt myself slipping into the darkness, while I was becoming too weak to continue to put up any kind of fight.
Just when I thought the darkness had won, I felt someone, or should I say, something reach into the water, snatching me right from it like I weighed little to nothing. My body was laid to rest on one of the smooth cool rocks that lined the edge of the river, and I instantly began to

cough up water that I had taken in, as I tried to push myself up from my stomach, but I was far too weak just yet to do so.
My sight was blurred by the tears that coated my eyes from coughing, but even through the blurriness of my vision, I could still make out the silhouette of what had saved me. To my surprise, one of the same creatures that I had just been running from was the same creature that had just saved my life and now had someone else in their arms.
It wasn’t until the creature moved towards me, did I realize that someone was no other than a motionless Mazie. Placing her body right next to mine, I began to panic as I could see that her lips were turning a shade of blue, and I knew that I had to find the strength inside of me to sit up, because Mazie needed me more than ever right now.
Taking a deep breath, I pushed myself up, as I scooted my body towards Mazie, flopping my head down onto her chest, checking to see if she was still breathing. When I felt nothing, I knew I had to give her CPR, as it was clear that she must have taken in too much water. Thankfully, I had taken a course on it back at my old school, and I knew exactly what to do, but I never thought in a million years that I would be actually using it on someone, especially my best friend.
Tilting her head back, I opened her airways, and began to do chest compressions on her, hoping that it wasn’t too late, as tears continued to stream down my cheeks not from coughing this time, but out of fear for Mazie’s life. As the seconds began to pass by with no signs of life from Mazie, I couldn’t help but cry out for help, but I knew there was no one
around that could hear me.
Tears now freely rolled down my cheeks, as I was running out of steam, but I continued to press on as my body began to give out on me. Before I could stop myself, my body fell forward, lying directly over top of Mazie, and I let out another cry, but this time it was out of frustration that I was too weak to help her. But as the cry came from my lips, and the frustration built up inside of me, I felt like I got a second wind.
Raising myself back up off Mazie’s chest, I let out a scream, before I brought my hands down hard on her chest with everything that I had, in a last–ditch effort, praying that it was enough
to save her.
