Chapter 145-2
“But if we don’t leave now, you won’t make it to Beaumont before the moon rises tomorrow night.” Carl informs me, and I couldn’t help but hear the worry in his tone, making me wonder if he knows what happens on a werewolf’s eighteenth birthday.
In a way, I guess it would have to be similar to his own species’ experience, since they too were also shapeshifters, if that was even the proper terminology for it. He would know what the human body would go through, but it made me wonder how different the two experiences could be, especially since my kind was a predatorial species.
Just the mere thought of me not being in control of my own body, and hunting Bambi down in the woods made my stomach turn into a knot, which in return scared the hell out of me. It had me now second guessing my decision to stay here beside Mazie’s side, but I knew that if the shoe was on the other foot, she wouldn’t even think twice about staying here with me.
“Trust me, I know, and I admit I am scared, but I can’t leave my friend.” I once again admitted to him, knowing that I was doing the right thing, but also knowing that I was gambling with my own life and future.
Unfortunately, it was a gamble I was going to have to make, because my friendship with Mazie was important to me, especially since I knew that she now was the only person I could count on in my life. After everything that had happened, I realized that not everyone I thought was my friend was, and right now, I only had two friends I felt like I could trust.
Jacob, unfortunately, was just a human, and he was even more oblivious to what was going on around here than I was, leaving him literally no help, other than emotional support. Mazie, on the other hand, was part of the world that I now somehow belonged to, and I knew that she had the knowledge and wisdom to get me through what lays ahead of me, and thus far, she had stood beside me when I needed her the most.
For the first time since I had become friends with Mazie, she needed me, and I needed to stand beside her, making sure that she pulled through. I just had to believe that all good deeds didn’t go unseen, and that there might be light at the end of this dark tunnel.
“Very well, but when the moon rises tomorrow night, I will have to ensure my own people’s safety.” Carl unfortunately informs me, with what sounds like regret, but I know that he is just trying to keep his own kind safe and I honestly don’t blame him.
Unfortunately, he now has me even more frightened than I already was, because now I am worried about what he thinks I might actually do. That’s if I shift for the first time. But by the sounds of it, I have until tomorrow night when the moon begins to rise, and between now and then, anything could happen, but I knew if I wanted to be somewhat prepared, then I needed

to know if Carl held any information that just might help me.

“I believe it is best if the two of you take this conversation outside. My patients need their rest.” The doctor told Carl and I, and I looked around the makeshift hospital tent at the other patients trying to rest, and I knew that Carl and I were talking keeping them from doing so.
Getting to my feet, I took one last look at Mazie resting, before I turned and followed Carl out of the tent, believing that I could leave her, because she was in good hands. As I stepped out of the tent beside him, I realized that night had fallen on us, as the moon now hung high above our heads. My birthday was now upon me, as I was sure only hours stood between me and my eighteenth birthday.
Looking up at the moon beaming down on me, I stared at it as if I was willing it to call out to me, but instead, it just felt like its moon beams blinded me, making me look away from it. It honestly had me questioning if anything was going to happen tomorrow, because one would think that I would be feeling something by now.
“You don’t feel anything, do you?” Carl asks me, making me turn to see him staring at me
with a confused look on his face.
Shaking my head, I admitted to him, “No. I don’t feel anything. Honestly, I don’t even think that I am a werewolf.”
Carl gave me a kind smile, before he said to me, “I hate to inform you, but you are something. What, I do not know, like I said before, you smell different. Unfortunately, you being raised as a human, has deterred you from knowing what you really are, but something tells me tomorrow all that will change for you.”
“I wouldn’t be so sure of that.” I said back to him, as I looked back up at the moon, now wondering why on earth I wasn’t having any response to it, if I truly was one of them.
“Does it hurt?” I now asked him, hoping that he would be honest with me, because I needed to be prepared for the worst.
“Does what hurt?” Carl asks me, before he realizes what I am asking, and then corrects himself by saying, “It only hurts the first time, but if you were with your mate, it wouldn’t hurt as badly. It is said that a she wolf’s mate can take away her pain on her first shift, hence why I think we should have left tonight for Beaumont.”
I stared at Carl, questioning my decision once again to stay, but I knew that the least I could do for Mazie is endure one night of pain if it came down to it. I mean how bad could it possibly be? But the more I thought about the anatomy of all of it, the more I realized how extremely painful it had to be, and I began to work myself up just thinking about it.
Carl then began to try and calm me, seeing the dread and worry in my eyes, as he explained

to me that it was a rite of passage that every shifter goes through. Hearing that there weren’t any known casualties, it put me somewhat at ease, but I honestly don’t think anything was going to completely calm me until I was back in Beaumont, facing all this head on with my
mates.
Unfortunately, for now, I knew that I might just be alone in this one. I just prayed that, whatever happens, I was strong enough to endure it, and the small pointers that Carl was now giving me were enough to get me through it.
