Chapter19-1
Raven’s POV
Throughout the first half of the day, I filled Mazie in on what had happeried last night after she had left me at the waterhole. She couldn’t believe that i actually denied Charice driving me trome, only to end up at his house, and to be asked to stay for dinner by his grandmother. The part that she loved the most was when i told her about Chase and Jessica showing up, and how Chance and Cash put Jessica in her place, leading to Evan telling her it was time for her to leave.
“Oh wow, I guess things aren’t as peachy between her and Chase as she leads us at to believe.” Mazie says to me, as we move down the hallway finally to the cafeteria after a long morning of whispering and staring in my direction, but I didn’t let any of that get to me, especially since I knew it was bothering Jessica more than me.
If anything, I held my head up high as I walked the hallways with Mazie by my side, knowing that Jessica’s eyes were on me, and taking joy in knowing that she was hearing these whispers firsthand. Her glares as I walked down the hallways between my classes no longer bothered me, and after the display of PDA this morning, I honestly hadn’t seen Chase in the hallways with her, making me wonder where he had taken off
“No, I think things are fine between her and Chase, it’s just not so good between her and the rest of the
family. Chance clearly told Chase that neither he nor Cash would accept her, so I am guessing they will be
eloping if they ever get married.”
Mazie busted out laughing at what I had just said, and even though it was somewhat humorous, I wouldn’t think that it would cause her to laugh like she was, but her laughter came to a halt as we stepped into the cafeteria, only to be met by a wall of Jessica and her friends blocking our way.
“Back off, Jessica.” Mazie told her, as she moved in front of me, as if to protect me from her, but I had dealt with enough mean girls in my days back home, and I was sure that after last night I could handle
Jessica on my own.
“So, are you her bodyguard now? Is Chance too busy to watch over her himself? Or are they letting you have a piece of the action too?” Jessica says to Mazie, as she crosses her arms over her chest, flipping her hair back over her shoulders in a typical mean girl style.
Mazie let out a growl of frustration, and I knew I had to stop her before she played into Jessica’s trap of getting her to lose her cool, only to get her suspended from school by her mother, telling her that Maziè had started the fight.
Grabbing ahold of Mazie’s arm just in the nick of time, I pulled her back before she lunged for her, all while I stepped between the two of them, crossing my own arms, letting her know that two could play this game, before I asked her, “What is it you want Jessica?”
Jessica’s eyes moved from Mazie to me, and I could have sworn they were darker than usual, but I had
only ten face-to-face with her a few times, making me believe that it was just my imagination making me think that they were. Slowly, a devious smile farmed on frer face, and I knew whatever she was about to say she was going to say it, to try and get under my skin.
“I was just coming to inform you that cheering practice is tonight after school. My mother told me to let you know so that you had a fair chance of making the squad like the rest of the girls trying out this year? Something about the way she said the word fair made me think that nothing about the tryouts was going to be fair for me, and that she had a hand in who made the squad. As if Mazie was thinking the same thing, she said to Jessica, “I’m sure that you of all people will make it fair as cheerleader captain. Did mommy buy you that position or did you somehow manage to scare everyone into voting for you?”
