Chapter 156-2
I let out a sigh of relief as I slowly lowered the opened umbrella to see Carl standing in the doorway, completely blocking the outside with his massive structure. It didn’t take long, though, for my eyes to spot the bandages on his arms and legs, making me realize that I wasn’t the only person here that had been injured last night.
But as I continued to slowly lower the umbrella, I realized that I must be in worse shape than Carl, as a sharp pain surged through my ribs, making me drop the umbrella on the floor between us before my arm moved to cradle my ribs. Carl rushed to my side, looking down at me, as tears once again began to impair my vision from the pain. But now that I knew it was Carl that was here with me and that I was safe, I let the tears freely flow from the corners of my eyes, while there was no use denying the pain that I was in.
“Let’s lay you back down. You need time to heal.” Carl tells me as he moves to help me back onto the couch that I had just risen from.
With the amount of pain I was in, it was clear that he was right about me needing more time to heal, but I also knew that time was ticking and that I needed to get back to Beaumont, even though it was clear I wasn’t in any shape or form to be traveling. Yesterday it was Mazie needing time to heal and now today it was me, leaving me to begin to fear that this was a sign or an omen trying to keep me away from Beaumont and my mates.
Lately, I have been beginning to believe that it wasn’t just us against the rogues, but that we were up against the whole universe trying to keep us apart, as it felt like every time I got close to one of them, I am sent ten steps back, or in this case right now, hundreds of miles away.
With the thought of the rogues, I now remembered why I was in the shape that I was in, and I couldn’t help but ask Carl, “What happened to the rogue wolf that was chasing us?”
Carl fluffed the pillow under my head, before he looked away from me and said, “You don’t have to worry about him any longer, but I now fear that he wasn’t alone. I have heard howls all night, as if his fellow rogues are looking for him.”
Slowly, Carl turned his head back to look at me, and when he did, I could see the exhaustion in his eyes, as it was clear that he had been up all night. Between taking care of my wounds and his own, to standing guard all night long, it was clear that it had paid a toll on him.
Plus, I had no clue even where the hell we were, but as long as we were away from his camp and Mazie was out of harm’s way, that was all that mattered to me. But seeing Carl like this, I knew that it was my fault, and I felt bad for putting him in this dangerous position and situation.

Claim
Last night, I should have just made a run for it before he caught up to me, then at least he wouldn’t be in the situation he is in now, but then I probably wouldn’t be alive if it wasn’t for him. After what I had witnessed last night, it was clear he wasn’t like his fellow peers, making
me wonder if he was like an Alpha to his kind.
Moving to sit back up, I was going to argue with him that I would keep a watch while he got some much–needed rest himself, but Carl was quick to stop me, as he says to me, “Raven, you really need to take it easy, especially if you want to heal enough that I can get you the hell out of here and back to civilization any time soon.”
“But you’re exhausted. The least I can do is keep a watch while you rest.” I said back, pleading with him, but instead of Carl agreeing with my proposal, he chuckled at me, as his eyes moved to the umbrella lying in the middle of the floor, while he said, “I think it’s best if we leave watch to me.”
I could only imagine what it had looked like to him when the umbrella had opened when it was pointed directly at him, blocking his view of me. Hell, that was the only good thing that it had done, because if he had seen my face then he would have seen the fear in my eyes. But in my defense, with my little mishap with it, I honestly think the damn thing was broken before I even laid hands on it.
This time, even though I knew that I was the weakest link between the two of us, I knew that I was at least capable of keeping watch, as I wasn’t a complete involent. My eyes were working and so was my mouth, leaving me more than capable of sitting outside and keeping watch.
But when I moved to open my mouth to put up an argument, Carl put his hand up, stopping me as his attention turned towards the door as if he had heard something. Before I knew what was happening, Carl was across the cabin from me, standing in the doorway, as he looked outside like he was waiting for something or someone to appear.
“Stay inside.” Is all he says to me, as he steps outside, shutting the door behind him, leaving me to wonder if we were under attack once again by the rogues.
Unable to just lay here on this damn couch in fear, wondering what the hell was going on outside, I gingerly got back to my feet, before I slowly and quietly made my way across the cabin. Pushing the old plaid curtains gently to the side, I peered out the small window on that side of the cabin, hoping I could see something.
For a moment, all I could see was Carl standing in the middle of the front yard, staring into the forest in front of him with his head raised in the air, as if he was trying to smell something. Slowly, Carl’s head lowered, and when it did, I spotted movement at the edge of the forest, as I watched Carl move into a fighting stance.

Stepping back from the window, my heart began to race in my chest, as I began once again to look for something to use as a weapon, because this time I was clearly going to need it for whatever had just found us.
