Chapter 159-1
Raven’s POV
There wasn’t much when it came to personal items in the cabin, as it was clear that this cabin was just meant for a stopping point between point A and point B for hikers, but as my eyes did a quick once over of the place, they thankfully landed on a small stove sitting in the corner. Barely noticeable sitting on top of the stove was a small cast iron pan that blended in quite well with it, as it was one of those old stoves that you see in rustic cabins, fueled by wood for heat and cooking purposes.
Taking one last look out the window at Carl still standing in a fighting stance in the middle of the front yard, I made my way across the cabin to the stove, as I tried to make sure not to make a noise. Thus far, I had to believe that whoever was about to storm the cabin didn’t know that I was awake, ready to back up Carl. But as I took the cast iron pan in my hand, I quickly began to second guess if I was in any shape or form to even help him, as the weight of the pan was too much for my right side to bear to hold.
Quickly, I shifted the pan to my other hand, letting it bear its weight, but in all honesty, I could still feel the burden of it. Tears of anger and frustration instantly began to fill my eyes, while I wondered if I was ever going to catch a damn break.
It seemed like since the day I came to Beaumont my life had been nothing but a whirlwind and even being hundreds of miles from there right now, I was realizing that I couldn’t run from it. My destiny seemed somehow written in stone, and even my mother found out that she couldn’t run from it, as I was now beginning to question the accident.
Even though I have no clue what the hell exactly caused the accident, because I was in the back seat of the car, messing around on my phone, I now had to wonder why my father veered the car into the other lane. His autopsy had come back clear, ruling out the possibility of a heart attack or a stroke, leading the investigators and I to wonder why he crossed the
line.
At first, I believed that he had somehow gotten distracted, but now knowing what all existed out there in this world, and knowing if they could exist, so could others, it had me wondering if it truly was an accident. It also had me believing that my mother and father weren’t the only ones supposed to have perished in the crash, as it was clear that these rogues wanted me dead.
As I held the cast iron pan in my hand, just staring at it, a part of me felt beaten and broken, ready to just give up, and join my parents in the afterlife. But just the mere thought of giving up, lit a fire inside of me, one that always existed before the crash, but had been silent since then. As that fire roared to life, my will to live slowly returned, and I had to believe that it was

somehow the doing of my mother’s spirit watching over me, not wanting me to give up.
Claim
My mother was one never to back down from a challenge, and she always faced her enemies head on, but that was in a courtroom and not on a battlefield in the middle of the damn woods in West Virginia. But then, on the other hand, it was clear that she had put up her own fight in Beaumont, or else she wouldn’t have gone on to live as long as she had and had me.
It’s crazy looking back now and seeing all the little hints that she had given me about not always going to be around to protect me, and that was why she had placed me in martial arts as a child. She always told me it was because one day she wouldn’t be there when I needed her the most, and that at least she had provided me with the skills needed to survive.
