Chapter 171-2
Knowing that plan was a bust, I turned my attention in the direction of the cabin just in the nick of time to see movement, making me ultimately pray that it was Carl, because right now I sure could use his size and strength to help me. But as the movement became clear, it definitely wasn’t Carl. Instead, it was somehow Jacob, who was screaming at the top of his lungs, running towards me as fast as his legs could carry him, while he looked over his right shoulder as if something was chasing after him.
Sure enough, just a few seconds later, a wolf came into view, but the wolf wasn’t just any wolf. It was clearly half the size of the wolves standing behind me, making me wonder why this wolf was so small compared to the other ones.
At first, I thought maybe it was a runt, but the closer it got to me, the more I realized that this wolf was no doubt a female. It was the first time I had seen a female in wolf form other than Mazie, and I was shockingly surprised by the size difference between Mazie’s wolf and the one that was running in my direction, chasing after Jacob.
Mazie was by no means a larger girl, making me now wonder if there was a reason why her wolf was so big. Looking back and forth between the two, comparing their wolves, I slowly began to piece together what the hell was happening here, or at least I thought I was. If my previous thoughts were correct, then that would make the wolf that presented himself to me my cousin’s Beta, leading me to believe that this wasn’t just any kind of duel.
There was a reason why Mazie was so loyal to Cash and his brothers, and I was starting to see now why. Mazie’s wolf was of Beta’s blood, making her second in command to them, and right now, she was challenging the rogue wolf who thought he was my Beta. This duel wasn’t just any kind of feud being settled, it was for a position, a position that Mazie’s wolf was willing to put its life on the line for, to protect me.
Once again, Mazie was putting my life before her own, proving her loyalty to me not only as a best friend, but someone that I knew I could always count on. The risks she kept taking were too grave, and I couldn’t allow her to continue to believe that she had to put my life before her own. She needed to know that her life was just as precious, and that I would throw my own life down for her, even if I was to be her so-called Luna.
Knowing now what the hell was going on, I knew that if I interfered that I would be dishonoring the challenge that she just made, forfeiting the win to the rogue wolf. By doing so, it would automatically make him my Beta per se, and I couldn’t allow this to happen. For one, I didn’t need a Beta, nor did I want one, because I didn’t want to be in charge of anything or anyone, especially when my own life was spiraling out of control.
Honestly, I had no clue if it was even possible, but the last thing I wanted was to become one

of those rogue Alphas that were hunting me. Literally they smelled like rotten eggs, and it would do nothing for what little social life I had left. Secondly, they were like the damn devil in disguise, killing and taking the lives of innocent people like Josie.
Looking around once again at the rogue wolves, I had to wonder if they could be rehabilitated or if they were all a lost cause. To be honest, I knew very little about their world, and knew that this was something that Cash and his brothers were going to have to deal with. That was if we all made it out of this alive. But first, I needed to figure out a way to indiscreetly help Mazie, so that we can end this right now.
Just as I was trying to rack my brain for a way to stop this, Jacob reached me, throwing his arms tightly around my neck. The force of the impact led to our bodies being thrown into a circle, and I bit my bottom lip, trying not to scream out in pain. I did my best to remain standing upright, as Jacob’s weight was too much for me to bear on my wounded leg, but I knew that he had no clue that I had been injured to be upset with him.
My eyes quickly moved to the female wolf that had been chasing him, seeing that she had stopped dead in her tracks when she realized what was happening. I watched her take her place next to the other rogue wolves, letting me know that she was the least of my worries right now.
Unfortunately, Jacob’s ear–piercing scream at that moment, bellowed loudly directly into my ear, making me quickly turn around to see what had him screaming for dear life once again. My own mouth opened to let out a scream, as I watched the rogue Beta holding his paw high in the air with his blood–stained claws fully extended, while he stared straight down at Mazie’s wolf’s battered body.
My eyes instantly filled with tears as I tried to release myself from Jacob’s death grip, knowing that I only had a few seconds to try and save her. Realistically, I knew there was no way in hell I could make it to her before he took the final blow, but I couldn’t just stand here and watch it happen.
Giving what I had left in the tank, I finally got Jacob’s grasp to loosen just enough for me to break free. But when I turned to take off in Mazie’s direction, Jacob quickly grabbed ahold of my arm once again, spinning me right back into his chest just before I watched the rogue Beta’s paw come down towards Mazie’s wolf.
