Chapter 172-1
Raven’s POV
Tears poured from the corners of my eyes as Jacob’s one arm was wrapped tightly around me, while his other arm was up around my shoulder with his hand pressing firmly on the back of my head, holding my face flush against his chest. He was obviously trying to protect me from witnessing Mazie’s death, but even though he was protecting my eyes from seeing it, my ears were still able to hear the gruesome growls and whimpers coming from straight behind me, that were too horrific to block out.
Even through my own loud screams, I could hear her wolf’s pain over them, as if she was calling directly out to me for help. But at this point, I just cringed in Jacob’s arms, closing my eyes and praying for her pain to stop, because I didn’t want her to suffer a moment longer.
My heart was breaking into a million little pieces with each second that was passing by, knowing from what I was hearing that she was suffering a painful death. Just like with my parents‘ deaths, I was right there with her, unable to stop death from ultimately coming for her. I was now thankful that I had been knocked out in the car accident, because hearing Mazie’s wolf right now was killing me.
Her cries for help made me feel responsible for what was happening to her, because I knew if I would never have come to Beaumont, or if I had taken Mrs. Jacobs up on her offer to move back to California, then none of this would be happening right now.
I was truly starting to believe that my family was somehow cursed, and everyone that I allowed myself to care about was doomed to die, so that I was forced to live the rest of my life alone just like my grandmother had. Now that I knew that werewolves and witches were real, it wasn’t so farfetched, especially when Lexi had informed me about how I was to retain my wolf.
But at this point, I could give a rat’s ass what happened to me, because if it meant that more people that I loved and care about were going to die, then I honestly didn’t care to live. Who the hell cares if I died, if that meant that others that I love would go on living without me in their lives, living a long and prosperous life.
Honestly, I had nothing left in my life, but my dreams, and they were nothing, especially if you were comparing them to someone’s life. Right now, I wish that I could turn back time and take Ms. Jacob’s up on her offer that day in the cemetery, or better yet, insist that my parents and I just stayed home that night of the accident. Then my parents would be alive, and so would my grandmother, along with Josie, who lost her life just because I moved to her small town, but most of all, Mazie wouldn’t be suffering this long and painful death right now, trying to protect me.
Chapter 172-1
Throughout the entirety of the assault, I sobbed into Jacob’s chest, while Jacob continued to hold my body protectively to his, until the rogues behind him began to howl simultaneously. At first, I honestly thought that it was a howl for the victory of their comrade, but I quickly heard the underlining sadness that accompanied it, making me realize that they too were feeling sorrow from her death.
Jacob at that moment surprisingly loosened the hold he had on me, and as I apprehensively raised my head from his chest, I could see him staring straight behind me with widened eyes, as a single tear dripped down his flushed cheek. Gradually his hands released me, before he took a step back, staring straight behind me, almost as if he was too afraid to look away.
My chest felt heavy as I just stood there facing him, too afraid to turn myself around, knowing that sometimes things are better when left unseen, especially in this case. I wanted to remember Mazie as that girl that had given me that huge genuine smile when I walked into the Diner, lost and bewildered when I had arrived in Beaumont.
