How could I tell him what really saw without him thinking I was crazy? But even now, as I tried to

convince myself it wasn’t real, and that it had been my mind playing tricks on me since I was late taking my medications, I could still smell its potent breath, breathing down my neck.

There was no way in hell I was going to reach out and pinch the damn thing, like my shrink had told me to do, as that thing had razor-sharp teeth that could rip my throat right out. I had never seen an animal of its

magnitude before, nor did I ever want to see one like it again. It was the size of a grizzly bear, but its face

was more like a wolf and had eyes that glowed red like a demon.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” Chance asks as we sit in his truck, parked outside my grandmother’s house.

I hadn’t spoken a word to him on the ride home, as the image of the beast haunted my mind, and I feared

saying something that would make him think less of me. This thing between us was very new, and I didn’t

want to ruin it before it even took off, as I couldn’t bear the thought of losing the first person, I felt a

connection with, since the accident.

“I’m just a little shaken up, but I’m fine.” Is what I told him, as I forced a closed-mouth smile, but it didn’t

last long, as I couldn’t bear to hold it, even though I tried.

“Okay than. I texted Mazie, and she is going to grab your belongings from the locker room and bring them

to you.”

“No!” I blurted out before I could stop myself, thinking about Mazie in the locker room if that thing was stil

there.

Chance reached over, placing his hand on my thigh, as he said to me, “It’s okay. She is with Cash Besides,

whatever has you spooked, it’s long gone.”

Frelaxed back in my seat, not because Cash was with her, because, honestly, there was no way a next Cash stood a chance against what that thing was, but because he said that it was long gooe But Th reaction to him telling me that Mazie was grabbing any belongings drew suspicion tronk Chance, as he a stared at me with a look of curiosity on his face

As I went to jump back out of the truck, Chance grabbed ahold of my arm, making me turn to look at him, as he asked me, “Is everything good between us?”

“Yeah, why wouldn’t it be?” asked him, knowing that it was my actions that were causing him to feel insecure, making me feel awful knowing that Twas making him feel this way.

Letting go of my arm, he gave me a half smile, and I knew by not talking to him about what I had seen was bothering him, but I just couldn’t do it. Shutting the door to his truck, I quickly made my way to the front door, only turning once to give him a quick wave, before I turned back as I looked all around me, now paranoid that that thing was lurking within the woods, watching me.
