Chapter 178-3
But as I blinked away the tears that were forming in my eyes as I continued to stare at him, I realized that by him being here with me, I was putting his life in danger. I knew by him going home that he would be safe, and deep down that meant more to me than him being by my
side.
Fighting back what tears were left, I ever so slightly nodded my head to him, unable to speak because even though I knew this was a good thing, a part of me was selfish, still wanting him to stay with me. But my attempts to hide my pain from him leaving didn’t go unnoticed, as Jacob knew me all too well and could see right through my mask.
Pulling me into an embrace, Jacob held me tightly to his chest, while I desperately tried my best to continue to hold back my tears, but with all the damn stress I had been under, his departure was too much for me to bear. With my tears now flowing freely from my eyes, I wrapped my own arms tightly around him, not wanting to let go, as I held onto him for dear life.
Jacob began at that moment to gently rock me in his arms ever so slightly, as he made the softest hushing sounds in my ear, trying to calm me down, while he continued to hold me in his arms, before whispering to me that everything was going to be okay. I wanted to believe him, I truly did, but after everything that had gone down, I wasn’t quite sure what my future actually held for me. I guess maybe, in a way, that was part of why those tears were flowing so freely, because I had no clue how my future looked, where Jacob was able to return to California, where all my past dreams lingered in limbo.
Pulling from the embrace, Jacob stared down at me with tear–filled eyes, telling me I wasn’t the only one having a hard time with his soon departure. Forcing a smile on his face, Jacob hopelessly says to me, “You know you could always come back to California with me.”
I knew by the look in his eyes that he knew what my answer was going to be, but I also knew that he was throwing it out there in the hope that I would somehow miraculously take him up on it. Honestly, the thought of returning was tempting, but even though my dreams remained in California, I knew my future no longer did, and something told me that he knew this too. Still unable to speak without fault, I began to shake my head, but as I tried to respond to his offer, the door to the backyard opened, drawing my attention to see Cash walking inside. Cash’s eyes immediately locked onto mine, and the look of concern plagued his face as he reached for me, and asked me with deep concern in his tone, “What is wrong?”
But before I could find my voice to explain my state to him, Mazie once again chimed in, this time nonchalantly by saying, “Jacob here, just asked Raven to return with him to California.”
